The services of Hays have been retained by our client, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) to recruit a Health & Safety Advisor based from their Newtownabbey office within the Direct Labour department. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) is one of the largest housing bodies in the UK, managing over 85,000 properties and serving more than 159,000 tenants. Your new role
As a Health & Safety Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in promoting a culture of safety and compliance across NIHE operations. You will support the implementation of health and safety policies, conduct inspections and audits, and provide expert guidance to staff and management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote awareness and ensure local implementation of NIHE Health & Safety policies and procedures
- Conduct workplace inspections and audits; produce reports and corrective action plans
- Support internal and external audits by providing timely and accurate information
- Develop and deliver health & safety training aligned with legislation and organisational needs
- Assist staff and managers in completing statutory risk assessments (e.g. COSHH, DSE, Manual Handling, Noise, Vibration, First Aid, New & Expectant Mothers)
- Investigate incidents and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are taken
- Provide expert advice on health & safety legislation and best practices
- Create bulletins, guidance notes, and contribute to internal communications
- Liaise with trade union representatives and staff to address health & safety concerns
- Maintain performance records and contribute to compliance reviews
- Deliver high standards of internal and external service by owning queries/complaints and escalating to H&S Manager (HED) when appropriate
- Foster and maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
- Deputise for the H&S Manager (DLO) when required; support and cover for the HED Health & Safety team to ensure operational resilience
- Carry out duties that enhance the reputation and public image of NIHE
- Enforce NIHE frameworks, policies and legal requirements including equality, health & safety, and information governance
- Champion the implementation of NIHE policies, plans and procedures in accordance with required timescales
- Stay informed on developments in health and safety legislation and best practices
- Direct and signpost staff to appropriate resources for matters outside the remit of this role
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet organisational needs in line with role grade and scope
What you’ll need to succeed
- NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction or General Health & Safety
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Health & Safety role within construction, engineering, or manufacturing
- Strong understanding of health & safety legislation and risk management
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills
- Valid driving licence or access to reliable transport
What you’ll get in return
- Salary range £37,280 - £44,075 per annum
- 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
- 35 days annual leave (pro rata)
- Paid business mileage - 45p per mile
- Paid Weekly by BACS
