Hays Engineering are delighted to be working with a global leader, to recruit an Electrical Design Manager. This is a senior leadership role offering the opportunity to lead complex engineering programmes and play a key role in the development of innovative, industry-leading products.
The Role
As Electrical Design Manager, you will lead the electrical engineering function, driving technical excellence, effective project delivery and continuous improvement across new and existing product platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the electrical engineering team responsible for the design of ground support equipment.
- Manage engineering projects from concept through detailed design, validation and release to production.
- Plan and allocate engineering resources across multiple concurrent projects.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and aligned with budgetary targets.
- Provide technical leadership and decision-making on complex engineering challenges.
- Support new product development and product enhancement initiatives.
- Conduct performance reviews, career development planning and support talent development.
- Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications and applicable standards, including EN12312, EN1915 and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
- Approve electrical designs, drawings, calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
- Oversee the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process.
- Lead structured design reviews including concept, preliminary and critical design reviews.
- Ensure appropriate design verification and validation testing prior to production release.
- Ensure electrical designs are optimised for manufacturability, assembly and serviceability (DFMA).
- Collaborate with Manufacturing to resolve build issues and improve production efficiency.
- Support value engineering initiatives to enhance cost competitiveness.
- Work closely with Supply Chain on component standardisation and supplier integration.
- Partner with Mechanical Engineering to ensure fully integrated system designs.
- Support Sales and Product Management with customer-specific technical requirements.
- Work with After-Sales and Customer Care teams to convert field feedback and warranty data into product improvements.
- Contribute to cross-departmental initiatives aligned with operational excellence.
- Drive improvements in engineering processes and workflows.
- Promote design standardisation, modular architectures and component reuse.
- Support innovation in electrical design, component selection and manufacturing technologies.
- Identify opportunities to enhance performance, reliability and sustainability.
- Develop, set and monitor KPIs covering delivery, quality, efficiency and cost.
About You
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience designing electrical systems for heavy equipment, mobile machinery or vehicle platforms.
- Minimum of 7 years' leadership experience within an engineering environment.
- Strong capability with 2D and 3D electrical CAD tools (EPlan, SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical, DraftSight or similar).
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, complex systems integration and control systems.
- Proven experience managing projects across the full product development lifecycle.
- Strong knowledge of regulated engineering environments and safety standards.
- Experience driving engineering process improvements or design standardisation.
- High level of technical judgement and attention to detail.
- Commercially aware with a strong understanding of manufacturing cost drivers.
- Structured, analytical and data-driven decision-maker.
- Proactive problem solver with strong organisational skills.
- Inspirational leader with the ability to motivate and develop high-performing teams.
- Confident communicator able to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
