A local authority in the South East is seeking an interim senior Contracts Lawyer to support its commercial and procurement work. The council is strengthening its internal legal capability and requires an experienced professional who can operate as the lead specialist for complex commercial matters. The organisation is committed to improving contract governance and procurement practice across the authority.
You will act as the primary advisor on commercial contracts and procurement issues, supporting a wide range of stakeholders. Your work will include:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts and framework agreements
- Advising on procurement strategies, compliance and risk
- Supporting improvements to internal processes, templates and governance documentation
- Managing complex matters independently with minimal supervision
- Providing clear, practical legal advice to service areas across the authority
The role offers autonomy and the opportunity to add real value to a developing commercial function.
You must be an experienced Commercial/Procurement Lawyer with a strong background in local authority or public sector contracting. You will also require:
- Demonstrable experience advising on commercial contracts and frameworks
- Strong knowledge of procurement law and public sector governance
- The ability to work independently on high-complexity matters
- Excellent drafting, communication and stakeholder management skills
- A pragmatic and solution-driven mindset
Local government experience is preferred but strong public sector procurement experience will also be considered.
Competitive hourly rate of £65-£75
One day per week office attendance
3-month rolling contract
