A top-tier, London-based disputes and advisory practice is seeking a talented Contentious Tax Associate to join its highly regarded team. The firm is known for its innovative, multidisciplinary approach, bringing together senior litigators, specialist advocates, technical experts, and data professionals to provide strategic solutions to complex legal matters. The practice advises an international client base, including ultra-high‑net‑worth individuals, family offices, major corporates, investment funds, and sovereign entities. Its market-leading Contentious Tax team is composed of experienced practitioners and respected advocates who act on high-value and high‑profile disputes spanning all levels of the UK courts and tribunals.
We are looking for an ambitious, bright, and technically strong Contentious Tax Associate to join a busy and dynamic litigation team. Applications are encouraged from both solicitors in established law firms and barristers at the independent Bar who are seeking a different style of practice. This position offers an exceptional level of responsibility and exposure to complex, high‑stakes work from an early stage. You will collaborate closely with colleagues across the wider commercial disputes team and have the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging tax matters in the market.
Key Responsibilities
- Advising clients on a wide range of contentious tax issues, investigations, and disputes.
- Assisting with appeals before the First-tier Tribunal, Upper Tribunal, and higher appellate courts.
- Preparing legal research notes, drafting opinions, interviewing witnesses, preparing statements and evidence, and drafting applications, pleadings, and correspondence.
- Delivering high‑quality client service in a professional, confident, and personable manner.
- Developing strong working relationships with colleagues, clients, and external specialists.
- Producing accurate, high‑quality work consistently and efficiently.
- Demonstrating initiative, enthusiasm, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
Qualifications & Experience
- Strong academic background from a well regarded university (or equivalent).
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in England & Wales, ideally with 3-5 years' PQE.
- Experience in tax litigation or contentious tax matters is essential.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with strong organisational ability and meticulous attention to detail.
- Motivated, proactive, and eager to contribute within a forward-thinking and fast-paced environment.
- A hands-on approach and enthusiasm for working across a broad range of responsibilities.
