Your new role
As Customs and Trade Compliance Executive, your job will be to support the logistics team with day-to-day import and export activity, as well as longer-term projects.You will play an important role in ensuring goods move smoothly between the UK, EU and international suppliers. Your responsibilities will include managing shipping documentation, monitoring deliveries, maintaining accurate records and ensuring import and export activity complies with relevant customs and trade regulations.Your key responsibilities will include:
- Managing import and export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and certificates of origin
- Ensuring the correct customs and supplier documentation is available to support timely imports
- Checking purchase orders against supplier sales contracts and identifying any discrepancies
- Liaising with freight forwarders, shipping lines, customs brokers and suppliers to coordinate shipments
- Monitoring shipment progress and helping to resolve delays, documentation discrepancies and customs-related issues
- Maintaining accurate, audit-ready records within the ERP system and other internal systems
- Providing regular updates on delivery schedules and incoming goods
- Responding to queries from sales teams and customers relating to orders, shipments and deliveries
- Supporting decisions concerning shipping methods, lead times and stock allocations
- Working with finance colleagues on duties, VAT and shipping costs
- Tracking logistics performance and shipping schedules
- Keeping up to date with changes to customs procedures and international trade regulations
What you'll need to succeed
Relevant experience is the top priority for this position. You should already have practical experience in import and export administration, international logistics, customs compliance or freight operations for your application to be successful.To be considered, you will need:
- Previous experience handling import and export activity or international shipments
- Practical knowledge of UK customs procedures
- Experience preparing, checking or managing international shipping documentation
- Confidence liaising with suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers or shipping providers
- Experience monitoring multiple shipments and resolving delays or documentation issues
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and the ability to update ERP or logistics systems accurately
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when checking contracts, purchase orders and customs documentation
- The ability to manage routine shipment activity alongside longer-term compliance projects
Experience using HMRC customs processes or the Customs Declaration Service would be particularly useful. Knowledge of Incoterms, freight management, Customs Warehousing, commodity codes, tariffs or wider trade compliance would also be advantageous.
