Your new role

We are looking for a Senior Engineer to join the Highways & Coastal Project Delivery team on a full-time and permanent basis. This contract is offered on a hybrid basis which is a combination of attending the office, working from home and regular site visits. As a Senior Engineer, you will lead and oversee the initiation, planning, design and implementation and monitoring of highway and coastal projects to a high standard and within budget, scope and on time. You will be responsible for supervising the delivery of planned activities and services within the Project Delivery and Asset Management teams in accordance with the Council's strategies and policies. Experience in flood & drainage design, SuDS and working for a Lead Local Flood Authority would be advantageous. Up to 5 direct reports depending on team managing and monitoring budgets (up to £10m) and project records.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, good knowledge and application of Highway Legislation, Flood and Drainage Legislation and Coastal Protection Legislation is essential. It is essential that you have working knowledge of financial management, including budgetary governance and controls. You must be able to provide timely and accurate advice to senior leaders/members/local councillors and the public on all highway, flooding and coastal related matters. Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective internal and external working relationships are crucial for this role. You must be able to prepare and design allocated elements of contract documents for various civil engineering schemes with minimal supervision using appropriate national design codes and standards. To be successful in this role, it is essential that you have experience using the NEC3 / NEC 4 Forms of Contract; Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works; Specification for Highway Works and the Standard Method of Measurement. Knowledge and experience of a range of relevant engineering or service techniques and procedures. Your application will not be considered if you do not have one of the following: Degree or HNC in civil engineering / highways / related discipline. Membership of (or working towards) a professional body and 7+ years' experience. Equivalent knowledge and experience of working in at least one relevant field (Highways Design/Maintenance, Flooding & Drainage Design or Coastal Design/Maintenance). Working towards or willing to acquire Chartered Civil Engineer status.
