Your new role
As Head of Tax, you will lead the organisation's tax compliance and advisory functions, ensuring adherence to UK and international tax legislation. Reporting to the Head of Corporate Finance, you will provide strategic direction, operational leadership and expert guidance on complex tax matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive tax strategy aligned with organisational goals
- Overseeing compliance across VAT, Corporation Tax, PAYE/NIC and customs duties
- Managing tax audits, HMRC enquiries and maintaining a robust tax risk register
- Advising senior leadership on tax implications of strategic initiatives, including international expansion and capital projects
- Leading and developing a high-performing tax team, fostering a culture of collaboration and service excellence
- Representing the organisation in sector-wide tax forums and maintaining strong relationships with HMRC and external advisors
This is a senior leadership role where you will act independently, influence decision-making and contribute to strategic financial planning.
What you will need to succeed
To succeed in this Head of Tax role you will need:
- Extensive experience in tax advisory and compliance within a complex organisation
- In-depth knowledge of UK tax legislation, particularly VAT, Corporation Tax and employment taxes
- A recognised tax or accountancy qualification (CTA or Equivalent)
- Proven ability to lead and develop teams and manage complex projects
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritise competing demands and deliver to tight deadlines
Desirable:
- Experience with Unit4 ERP systems
- Knowledge of tax in the not-for-profit or public sector
- Understanding of overseas tax issues
