We are working with a local authority client seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join their team on a temporary basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional with strong knowledge of housing standards and enforcement within the private rental sector.
The role will initially be office-based at Bernard Weatherill House, with site inspections across the borough. Once established, hybrid working may be considered, with a minimum of 3 days per week in Croydon.
Your new role:
- Conduct inspections and take statutory action relating to private sector dwellings, including Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), ensuring compliance with housing standards.
- Manage the full licensing process for privately rented properties and HMOs, including inspections, application checks, issuing licences, and monitoring compliance.
- Provide advice and guidance to landlords, tenants, managing agents, and other stakeholders on housing legislation and standards.
- Take enforcement action where necessary, including issuing financial penalties and pursuing prosecutions for non-compliance with legal responsibilities.
What you'll need to succeed:
- Previous experience as an Environmental Health Officer within housing enforcement.
- Strong knowledge of housing legislation and HMO licensing.
- Ability to carry out inspections and manage enforcement processes effectively.
- Access to a private vehicle is highly desirable due to travel requirements across the borough.
What you'll get in return:
You will join an established team on a 3-month rolling contract working hours per day, Monday to Friday. The council will offer £25–£30 per hour (Umbrella).
