We are working in partnership with our client to source an experienced Carpenter for a fixed-term assignment of approximately four months. This role will be based within central London. The successful candidate will support a range of fabric maintenance and carpentry tasks, with a strong emphasis on fire-door remedial works ahead of an upcoming audit. This opportunity is well suited to a professional Carpenter with proven experience in public, educational, cultural, gallery or museum environments. Candidates should ideally hold an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry or an equivalent qualification.
Key Responsibilities:- Fire Door Remedial Works (Primary Requirement)
- The core focus of this assignment is the completion of comprehensive fire-door repairs and compliance works across the Vernon Square estate. Candidates must demonstrate:
- Extensive hands-on experience repairing, adjusting, and maintaining fire doors in line with current fire-safety regulations.
- Competence in replacing and fitting intumescent strips, smoke seals, hinges, closers, locks, latches and associated ironmongery.
- Ability to assess door performance, identify non-compliance issues, and carry out corrective actions to prepare for formal fire-door audits.
- Understanding of fire-door certification requirements and best practice for installation and maintenance.
- General Carpentry & Fabric Maintenance Duties
- Ironmongery Tasks
- Install, repair, or replace locks, digital keypads, door handles, hinges, overhead door closers and floor springs.
- Replace intumescent seals and undertake associated compliance-related adjustments.
- Carpentry Tasks
- Cut, prepare and install shelving.
- Repair or replace damaged architraves, skirting boards, window shutters and access panels.
- Re-hang doors and undertake sash-cord repairs.
- Furniture Repairs
- Replace edging strips on tables.
- Repair pedestal units and assemble or repair residential bedroom furniture.
- Repair or replace locks on pedestals and wardrobe units.
- Refurbishment Support
- Remove and reinstate fixtures and fittings such as blinds, shelving, noticeboards, whiteboards, pictures and door signage.
- Reactive Maintenance & Emergency Response
- Attend to urgent issues relating to fabric or mechanical plant, including leaks, ensuring appropriate first-line response and making safe.
- Follow up on reported maintenance issues and update the CAFM (helpdesk) system with progress and completion notes.
- Stock & Materials Management
- Liaise with line management regarding critical spares and consumables.
- Maintain an organised store of fabric-related materials to support timely reactive repairs.
- Support to Estates & Building Services
- Assist the Building Services/Controls Engineer with periodic reviews of planned preventative maintenance schedules.
- Provide support to colleagues on reactive tasks or installations requiring two-person working.
- Record measurable conditions such as airflow, tap temperatures and water-meter readings, passing data to the Estates Operations Supervisor.
- Fire Safety Support
- Assist with weekly fire-alarm testing, ensuring accurate logbook entries and reporting defects promptly.
- Ironmongery Tasks
- NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry or equivalent qualification.
- Demonstrable experience in fire-door maintenance and compliance (essential).
- Previous experience in educational, cultural, gallery or museum settings (preferred).
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Good communication skills and confidence liaising with on-site teams.
