Working for Hays on behalf of a market-leading specialist tunnelling contractor, you will play a hands-on role setting out and controlling works for utility tunnelling and associated shafts on a flagship programme in Northampton. This role is site-based within a subcontractor delivery team interfacing daily with the principal contractor and utility stakeholders.

Your new role:

  • Provide precise setting out and survey control for microtunnelling/AVN, pipe-jacking and guided auger operations, shafts/caissons, head/tail pits and associated civils.
  • Establish primary/secondary control, verify surveys, manage as-built records and produce red-line mark-ups for handover.
  • Prepare and brief ITPs, check sheets and QA documentation; evidence compliance with tolerances and utility owner standards.
  • Coordinate with Site/Senior Engineers, Temporary Works Coordinator, Supervisors and subcontract specialists to sequence work safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain H&S leadership on the ground - dynamic risk assessments, permits to dig/lift, confined space controls and adherence to CDM.

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Setting Out Engineer or Site Engineer on utilities tunnelling / pipeline / deep drainage or heavy civils packages.
  • Competent with total station and GNSS instrumentation (Leica/Trimble), levelling, control establishment and QA surveys.
  • Familiarity with microtunnelling/AVN and pipe-jacking tolerances, launcher/reception pit control, and shaft interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of RAMS, temporary works interfaces, permits and utility protection.

Qualifications & tickets (most commonly requested):

  • CSCS
  • Confined Space (Medium/High Risk) for shaft/pit access - Advantageous
  • CAT & Genny competency
  • TWC/TWS awareness (TWS certificate advantageous).
