Your new company
You will be joining a leading UK construction and infrastructure contractor with an established in-house engineering and design capability. The business delivers complex infrastructure projects across the UK and provides specialist engineering support to both tender and live construction teams. With a strong pipeline of work across highways, drainage and wider civil engineering, they are looking to strengthen their engineering team with an experienced Civil / Temporary Works Design Engineer.
Your new role
You will provide construction engineering and design support across a varied portfolio of projects, with a particular focus on temporary works, highways and drainage solutions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering temporary works design and checking, integrating solutions with permanent works designs where required.
- Supporting tenders and bids through feasibility studies, outline designs, concept development and buildability reviews.
- Developing alternative engineering solutions and value engineering opportunities to improve buildability, efficiency and project cost.
- Reviewing third-party designs and ensuring compliance with project, client, CDM and technical requirements.
- Producing and reviewing calculations, drawings, technical reports and design risk assessments.
- Identifying and resolving technical, construction and design issues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Undertaking site visits, surveys and inspections and providing practical engineering advice to site teams.
- Leading elements of projects, coordinating engineers and technical staff and ensuring designs are delivered to programme and budget.
- Attending design, project and progress meetings and building strong working relationships with clients, design teams and construction teams.
- Supporting the commercial management of design projects, including fee proposals, progress reporting and programme forecasting.
The position will suit an engineer who enjoys combining technical design with practical construction engineering and wants exposure to projects from tender and pre-construction through to delivery on site.
What you'll need to succeed
You will have a strong civil or construction engineering background with experience in areas such as temporary works, highways, drainage or infrastructure design. Ideally, you will have:
- Progress towards IEng or CEng status with a relevant professional institution such as the ICE, alongside relevant industry experience. Alternatively, a relevant Level 6 or Level 7 qualification.
- Experience producing or reviewing engineering calculations, drawings and design documentation.
- A good understanding of CDM Regulations, design risk management and construction buildability.
- The ability to work collaboratively with clients, designers, commercial teams and site-based construction teams.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the confidence to provide technical advice.
- A full UK driving licence would be preferred due to the requirement to undertake site visits.
What you'll get in return
You will join a major infrastructure business offering exposure to technically challenging civil engineering projects and the opportunity to develop your experience across design, temporary works, tendering and construction delivery. You will work alongside experienced engineering professionals within an environment that supports continued professional development and progression towards professional accreditation. The business also places a strong emphasis on employee wellbeing, inclusion and long-term career development.
