Role Description

The Locum Optometrist will provide comprehensive, person-centered eye examinations and follow-up care for patients in an independent practice setting.

Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting routine and specialist assessments, diagnosing and managing ocular conditions within scope of practice, and collaborating on myopia management, dry eye care, visual comfort assessments, and paediatric eye care.

The role involves advising on clinical findings, discussing treatment and management options, and working closely with the dispensing and practice team to deliver tailored eyewear solutions and a high standard of patient experience.

The Locum Optometrist will maintain accurate clinical records, support continuity of care, and contribute to a calm, detail-focused environment that reflects the practice’s values.

This is a part-time, on-site role located in Haywards Heath.

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) and eligibility to practice as an Optometrist in the UK; relevant professional indemnity cover.
  • Strong clinical skills in comprehensive eye examinations, refraction, contact lens fitting, and detection and management of common ocular conditions.
  • Experience or interest in specialist areas such as dry eye management, myopia management, children’s vision, and visual comfort assessments.
  • Ability to use modern diagnostic equipment and practice management systems confidently and accurately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centered approach and the ability to build trust with individuals and families.
  • Attention to detail in clinical record-keeping, adherence to professional and regulatory standards, and commitment to evidence-based practice.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work closely with the wider practice team to deliver consistent, high-quality service.
