Hawthorne designs, installs and maintains CCTV, access control, intruder alarms and fire detection for businesses that cannot afford to get security wrong. We are SSAIB certified, Safe Contractor approved and Cyber Essentials certified, with Hikvision and Paxton at the heart of what we install.
WHY WE'RE HIRING
We look after more than 50 fire alarm maintenance contracts across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, from pharmacies and dental practices to factories and blocks of flats, and our fire installs run from a few detectors to a full factory system. We need a fire engineer who can service, fault-find, install and commission to BS 5839-1 and sign the certificate without anyone standing over them. We are also working towards BAFE SP203-1 registration for fire alarm systems, and the right engineer will help us get there.

THE PACKAGE
£35,000 to £45,000 basic, depending on how many disciplines you can service, install and commission on your own:
- £35,000: one of fire, CCTV, intruder or access control
- £38,000: two of them
- £41,000: three of them
- £45,000: all four
An FIA Level 3 fire qualification counts as a step on its own. Get signed off on something new with us and your basic goes up there and then, not at the next annual review.
Paid standby at £25 a day for every day you are on the rota, whether the phone rings or not.
Overtime on top at time and a half for evenings, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.
We will be straight with you about where the extra comes from. It is standby and overtime, not a bonus scheme. If you want the basic and nothing else that is fine and the job is still yours, but the engineers who earn the most here are the ones who put their hand up for the rota.
Holiday is 20 days plus all eight bank holidays, and we close from lunchtime on Christmas Eve until the New Year on top of that. It works out at around 33 days off a year.
Company van, fuel card, phone, tools, test kit and PPE all provided. Workplace pension. Courses and qualifications funded when you need them, including the FIA Level 3 fire qualifications for the right person.
GOT CUSTOMERS OF YOUR OWN?
If you work for yourself and look after a book of fire or security customers, but you are tired of doing the quotes, the chasing and the out-of-hours calls on your own, talk to us. Bring your customers across and we will look after them properly, with you still their engineer. We will also pay you for every customer who comes with you and stays.
HOW WE ACTUALLY RUN
We are a small team, and we plan the work around people's lives rather than the other way round.
One of our engineers needed to be home for teatime on a Tuesday to have his boy. So that is how his Tuesdays were built, every week, without him having to ask twice.
If there is an area you hate working in, we will not keep sending you there.
If your day's work is done, go home. We do not find you something to fill the time.
If you have something on, tell us and we will plan around it.
The biscuit barrel is always full, and Leanne's door is always open.
THE PERFECT CANDIDATE
You have at least two years servicing, installing and commissioning commercial systems in at least one of these:
Fire detection and alarm systems to BS 5839-1, conventional and analogue addressable. You can find an earth fault on a loop, work through a cause and effect, and leave a logbook and certificate an auditor would be happy with. This is the one we most need.
IP CCTV: cameras, NVRs, remote viewing, and finding out why a site has lost its pictures.
Intruder alarms: grade 2 and grade 3 systems to PD 6662 and BS EN 50131, signalled to an alarm receiving centre.
Access control: Paxton or similar.
Every extra discipline you bring is worth £3,000 or more on your basic, up to £45,000 for someone who can commission all four. If you have one now and want to learn the rest, we will train you and pay you more as you are signed off.
You leave sites tidy and paperwork complete, because in our world a job is not finished until it is certified and handed over. You talk to clients like a professional, because you are often the only Hawthorne person they meet. FIA, ECS, 18th Edition, IPAF and PASMA are all welcome, and we fund the gaps for the right person.
A TYPICAL DAY
Every day is different! One day you will be out servicing, the next on an install, doing a few surveys, or on an emergency call out to help our customers.
THE NITTY-GRITTY
Based at our Norwich office (NR6), travelling to sites across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, with occasional work further afield. Full-time, permanent, 37.5 hours Monday to Friday, with a share of the out-of-hours standby rota because our clients get a four-hour emergency response and we mean it. Full UK driving licence essential and you will need to pass BS 7858 security screening, including enhanced DBS and further police checks. Reporting to our Managing Director. We are looking for someone to start ASAP.
