Job Description
Tax Law Partner / Legal Director
Location: Manchester
Salary: £110,000 – £140,000 + Equity/Partner Profit Share & C-Suite Backing
Are you an accomplished Tax Partner or Senior Director with an established client following, seeking the autonomy, strategic authority, and firm backing to lead a flagship Tax Practice within a fast-growing national law firm? Our client is a dynamic, commercially minded law firm in Manchester known for doing law differently—putting authentic client relationships and cross-departmental collaboration at the heart of its business. Experiencing sustained nationwide expansion, they are seeking an entrepreneurial Tax Partner (8+ PQE) with a portable client base to build out a standalone tax offering across corporate, real estate, private wealth, and contentious matters.
The Opportunity
In this high-profile equity-track position, you will leverage your existing client connections and take lead operational responsibility for building and heading the firm's national Tax Law practice. Supported directly by C-Suite leadership, senior partners, and a dedicated marketing function, you will deliver sophisticated direct and indirect tax advice to corporate entities, high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and trustees. Designed for a commercially sharp practitioner with a proven track record of fee generation who wants to escape traditional law firm bureaucracy, this role offers direct strategic influence, a lucrative profit distribution model, and full cross-referral support across corporate, property, and private client practice groups.
Key Responsibilities & Requirements
-
Qualifications & Experience: Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) or CTA / Chartered Tax Adviser with a minimum of 8+ years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) in corporate, commercial, or private client tax law within a recognized UK practice.
-
Portable Client Following: Demonstrable track record of fee generation and an established, portable client following (or a proven network capable of generating consistent instructions) to anchor the practice.
-
Practice Building & Leadership: Proven capability to establish, lead, and scale a dedicated tax practice group, supported by strong commercial instincts and entrepreneurial drive.
-
Broad Technical Depth: Comprehensive expertise advising across transactional and advisory tax disciplines, including corporate tax structuring, personal tax planning, Inheritance Tax (IHT), Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT), VAT, and contentious tax disputes.
-
Cross-Departmental Support: Strategic capability to support property, corporate, and private client teams on the tax dimensions of high-value transactions and restructuring projects.
Package & Working Structure
-
Competitive Remuneration: £110,000 – £140,000 base compensation per annum (commensurate with PQE and portable following) plus attractive Partner profit share / equity distribution options.
-
Agile & Hybrid Structure: Modern hybrid working policy based out of Manchester—built on trust, allowing you to choose the environment where you work best.
-
Comprehensive Healthcare & Benefits: Private Medical Insurance (Vitality), Cash Plan (Medicash), salary sacrifice pension scheme (NEST), and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) extended to family members.
-
Leave & Flexibility: 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, your birthday off (increasing with service), and enhanced wellbeing and family-friendly policies.
-
Culture & Perks: Direct C-Suite and Senior Partner access from day one, regular CSR events, seasonal celebrations, referral bonuses, free fruit/drinks, and regular office lunches.
