Costs Lawyer
Location: Birmingham
Salary: £45,000 to £75,000 (depending on experience)
Experience: Qualified Costs Lawyer or working towards qualification
Our client is looking to hire a Costs Lawyer into a specialist Niche Costs and Advocacy team based in Birmingham. This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys technically complex costs work, wants exposure to high-value matters, and is comfortable being involved across the lifecycle of a claim, not just the costs element in isolation.
The team supports both commercial litigation and personal injury work, advising from early reserving and cost estimates, through budgeting and case management, through to conclusion, including recovery or dispute of costs.
This role can suit either a qualified Costs Lawyer or a more junior candidate who is studying towards qualification or planning to start the qualification route soon. You will work closely with litigators and attend hearings where needed, including CCMCs and applications.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Drafting costs budgets and supporting the budgeting process
- Preparing bills of costs and assessing bills of costs
- Drafting Points of Dispute and Replies
- Drafting Schedules of Costs
- Negotiating costs settlements
- Attending CCMCs and application hearings and undertaking advocacy where appropriate
- Managing a caseload and prioritising deadlines effectively
- Supporting legal teams throughout the lifecycle of matters, from early cost estimates through to conclusion
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified Costs Lawyer, or actively working towards qualification
- Experience across defendant and claimant costs work is preferred
- Confident drafting and negotiation skills, with strong attention to detail
- Comfortable handling high-value matters across personal injury and commercial litigation
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships
- Able to work efficiently under pressure and manage competing priorities
