About The Role
The Marine Operative will play an important role in supporting the safe and efficient day‑to‑day marine operations of the Port. Working as part of the Marine Team, you will assist with vessel movements, pilotage operations, mooring activities and the operation of small craft, ensuring vessels arrive, berth and depart safely. The role also involves supporting routine vessel and quayside maintenance, maintaining clear communication with colleagues and vessel masters, and ensuring all activities are carried out in line with maritime safety standards and Port procedures.
What You'll Do
- Assist the vessel skipper and other crew members to facilitate the safe arrival, docking and departure of company vessels at the Port.
- Assist the vessel master with navigation tasks as required, including lookout duties and deck operations.
- Operate small marine craft in support of port operations.
- Act as a deckhand during pilotage operations, assisting with the safe transfer of pilots to and from vessels.
- Assist with the safe mooring and unmooring of vessels visiting the Port.
- Handle ropes, lines and associated equipment during vessel berthing and departure operations.
- Carry out routine inspections and maintenance of company vessels to ensure they remain safe and operational.
- Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of quayside infrastructure, equipment and fenders.
- Support general operational activities across the Port as required to maintain safe and efficient operations.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to minimise risks and ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
- Participate in safety checks, drills and operational procedures to ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including fire, medical incidents and other marine emergencies, in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain clear communication with vessel masters, crew members and port colleagues to coordinate operations effectively.
- Maintain accurate operational records, including navigation logs, maintenance records and other relevant documentation.
- Assist in the preparation and review of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) relating to marine and port operations.
What We Expect Of You
- Previous experience in a similar role including workboat, small craft and lifting operations experience.
- Valid STCW qualifications (RYA Day Skipper, Power Boat Level 2).
- A VHF radio operator qualification.
- A full driving licence valid in the UK.
- A valid ENG1 or ML5 medical.
- Previous experience stepping up to act as Mate or Master (desirable).
- A good understanding of marine diesel engines and vessel control systems (desirable).
- A CSCS labourer card (desirable).
- Thrive in a team environment, collaborating effectively with others, sharing knowledge and contributing to collective success.
- Prioritise health and safety in all aspects of your work, proactively identifying risks and ensuring compliance with all regulations.
- Be prepared to work long hours in variable conditions, often in inclement weather and be willing to live aboard company vessels if working on charters.
- Be able to lift heavy objects and work in confined spaces.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, whether in writing or verbally, tailoring your message to the audience.
- Remain positive and composed under pressure, adapting to challenges and maintaining focus to solve any problems.
