The Data Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and efficiency of our modern data platform. Working at the intersection of data engineering, platform operations, and team enablement, this role owns the operational health of our Snowflake data warehouse, dbt transformation layer, and ELT pipelines.
Platform Operations & Reliability
- Own the operational health of the Snowflake environment, including warehouse sizing, query performance optimisation, and cost management.
- Monitor and maintain dbt project health, including model performance, test coverage, and documentation standards.
- Ensure ELT pipeline reliability across ingestion tools (Fivetran, Airbyte, Stitch, or similar), with appropriate alerting and incident response processes.
- Manage data freshness SLAs and communicate proactively when issues arise.
Cost & Resource Management
- Monitor and optimise Snowflake credit consumption, identifying inefficient queries and recommending warehouse configurations.
- Implement resource monitors, tagging strategies, and chargeback models where appropriate.
- Partner with Finance to forecast data platform costs and manage budget.
Governance & Quality
- Establish and enforce data quality frameworks using dbt tests, freshness checks, and anomaly detection.
- Maintain access control policies and ensure compliance with data governance requirements.
- Own the incident management process for data issues, including root cause analysis and prevention measures.
Enablement & Process
- Define and maintain operational runbooks for common tasks and incident response.
- Support data engineers and analysts with best practices for dbt development, including code review standards and deployment processes.
- Champion observability tooling (Monte Carlo, Elementary, dbt Cloud, or similar) to provide visibility into data health.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Data Engineering on infrastructure improvements and architectural decisions.
- Partner with Analytics and Business Intelligence teams to understand data consumer needs and prioritise reliability improvements.
- Coordinate with Security and Compliance on audit requirements and access reviews.
Required Experience
- Extensive experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data platform roles.
- Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake administration and SQL optimisation.
- Proficiency with dbt (Core or Cloud), including advanced features like incremental models, macros, and testing frameworks.
- Experience operating ELT pipelines at scale with tools like Fivetran, Airbyte, or custom solutions.
- Understanding of DataOps principles and CI/CD for data (version control, automated testing, deployment pipelines).
Desirable
- Experience with data observability platforms (Monte Carlo, Elementary, Datafold).
- Familiarity with orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect).
- Background in cost optimisation for cloud data platforms.
- Knowledge of data governance frameworks and compliance requirements (GDPR, SOC2).
