This is an important role within our Corporate Finance team, providing high-quality Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Cashiering support across the Council. As an Exchequer Officer, you will help ensure income, payments and financial transactions are processed accurately, efficiently and on time, while providing excellent customer service to colleagues, customers, suppliers and service users.
We’re looking for someone who is highly organised, numerate and confident working with financial information. You’ll be supporting a busy Exchequer service, processing and recording transactions, helping ensure invoices are paid promptly, income is managed effectively and outstanding debt is followed up appropriately. You’ll also work closely with budget holders, service users, procurement colleagues, suppliers and other members of the Finance team, explaining financial processes clearly and helping colleagues access reliable information when they need it.
You should have
- GCSEs, equivalent qualifications, or experience demonstrating this level of applied knowledge.
- Experience of working in Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Cashiering or a similar financial processing environment.
- Experience of handling high-volume processing with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good analytical, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial processes to non-financial colleagues.
- Confidence using IT applications, including finance systems and Excel.
- The ability to work well as part of a team, manage your own workload and use your initiative in a changing operating environment.

This role is advertised full time 37 hours per week, although we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working and would consider a job share/part time hours. Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)
As part of Local Government Reorganisation, current plans will see us combine with Portsmouth City Council and the district and borough councils of Fareham, Gosport and parts of East Hampshire and Winchester district councils to form a new, larger unitary authority for South East Hampshire.
We are working towards an implementation date of 1 April 2028, known as vesting day, subject to Parliamentary approval. Until then, we remain focused on maintaining continuity, supporting our workforce, and continuing to deliver excellent services to our residents throughout the transition to the new unitary authority.
