HD is a dynamic medical device and product design consultancy, currently inviting direct contact from experienced first-class medical device and product design engineers looking for an interesting and challenging role within a highly supportive business with ambitious plans. As a customer-focused team with a clear growth plan, the whole team contributes and benefits from this. By joining HD, you will work with a strong, friendly and supportive team with an excellent record of developing our staff. We will work hard to ensure you are soon comfortable with your work and making great progress in your career. You will benefit from working directly with a variety of highly skilled consultants, suppliers and clients on a range of interesting projects in a commercial and fast-paced environment. By joining HD, you will soon receive the recognition and satisfaction of winning, designing and delivering cutting-edge designs for a range of international clients.

Working within a formal design development process, you would be responsible for your own projects whilst liaising and collaborating with colleagues to ensure all projects are completed successfully. Typically working to a client's brief, but sometimes on our own technology, your days would include user and technical research, creating hand sketches to generate innovative ideas, and using SolidWorks to develop 3D concepts, through detailed design engineering and into manufacturing data/drawings. We strive for efficient design and engineering to deliver successful projects, so you will also make use of a wide variety of different tools and processes to solve the inevitable challenges of creating cutting-edge designs.

You will have commercial responsibility and will manage significant projects and small teams of colleagues to deliver projects on time and to budget. This will regularly involve working on multiple projects in different phases of work, so managing time and priorities to suit available resources and client needs will be required.

Typical daily tasks might include:

  • Research and Idea Generation
  • Concept Design and Development
  • Human Factors and User Studies
  • Risk Analysis and Management
  • 2D Sketching
  • 3D CAD modelling (SolidWorks)
  • DFM (Design for Manufacture)
  • Design Engineering
  • DFMEAs
  • Tolerance Analysis
  • 2D Drawings
  • Project Management
  • Account management

3D design and component detailing must be first class, with fully drafted plastic parts and all moulding requirements identified. Any steel and fabricated parts must be designed considering available materials and manufacturing processes from the outset. Our client’s products are of the highest quality, so our designs need to be thoroughly engineered to perform in the same manner.

HD has been established for nearly 30 years and is eager to grow further in our target sectors. You will be encouraged to develop your skills, knowledge and capabilities, so regular development and training is provided across the whole team. We encourage engagement of everyone to help grow the business by looking for opportunities to develop innovative ideas whilst building strong relationships with our clients, so there will likely be opportunity to travel to meet colleagues/clients and attend trade shows too.

Experience Required

Due to the nature of our work, we are looking for someone with at least 5 years design experience. Knowledge and experience of the medical and healthcare sector is advantageous, but a strong mechanical design aptitude, particularly of complex/small mechanisms and mouldings in a highly regulated industry, would be considered. A track record of developing successful products utilising a range of materials and manufacturing processes is a must. A good understanding of project management and its accompanying commercial implications would be helpful too. We are looking for someone fully conversant with the suite of SolidWorks software. However, we realise that the person we are looking for may not be able to cover the whole range of skills required, so training will be provided to cover any shortfalls in knowledge. Knowledge and experience of medical device development would be an advantage, but full training in the particulars of this discipline will be provided. You must be located in the UK, or have plans to relocate near to Stafford as we typically work from the office, 3 days per week.
