We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing manufacturing business. This is a hands-on engineering role that combines design, development and production support responsibilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, modification and continuous improvement of our product range while working closely with production teams on the shop floor to ensure efficient and high-quality manufacturing. The role requires a practical engineer with strong mechanical design expertise, experience in electrical and hydraulic systems, and the ability to manage engineering modifications from concept through to implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Design & Development
- Design and develop systems in accordance with customer specifications, regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Produce detailed engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using Solidworks.
- Design and develop hydraulic systems for tipping, lifting and specialist applications.
- Design electrical wiring looms and associated electrical systems for equipment.
- Undertake engineering calculations and technical assessments to validate designs.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK and European legislation and industry standards.
- Production & Shop Floor Support
- Work closely with production staff to resolve manufacturing issues and improve build efficiency.
- Provide hands-on technical support during fabrication, assembly and commissioning activities.
- Conduct regular shop floor inspections to ensure designs are being manufactured correctly.
- Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of production and quality issues.
- Engineering Modifications & Continuous Improvement
- Manage engineering change requests and product modifications.
- Investigate customer feedback and field issues, developing practical engineering solutions.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, product enhancement and manufacturing improvements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
- Project Management
- Manage engineering projects from concept through to production release.
- Coordinate activities with purchasing, production, quality and sales teams.
- Support supplier selection and technical evaluation of components and systems.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Significant experience in a mechanical design engineering role within manufacturing.
- Experience of commercial vehicle, agricultural, plant or heavy engineering sectors.
- Strong 3D CAD design experience (SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or similar).
- Experience designing hydraulic systems and components.
- Experience designing electrical wiring looms and vehicle electrical systems.
- Strong understanding of fabrication, welding and sheet metal manufacturing processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering standards and technical specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with production teams.
