A PSV Company bus driver is responsible for driving a passenger‑carrying vehicle (PCV) and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS buses.
Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Always wear high visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Check the condition of the vehicle before service, carrying out safety walk‑round checks, reporting defects, completing Vehicle Defect Cards or entering defects electronically.
- Keep vehicle clean and tidy before starting service.
- Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile phone use, smoking, and prohibited equipment (e.g., games consoles) while on duty.
- Attend safety briefings and training as required.
- Report all safety accidents/incidents using the company’s reporting procedure.
- Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
- Keep the bus cab area safe and tidy.
- Provide a high standard of customer service and behave friendly and professionally towards customers and colleagues.
- Assist children, vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled with additional needs.
- Drive company vehicles safely, legally, and professionally, meeting the timetable and avoiding running early or late unless safe.
- Keep up‑to‑date with road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service.
- Hold a valid driving licence and CPC licence at all times, available for inspection on demand.
- Maintain core working hours between 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30, and work flexible hours as required.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Licence must be D1 category with no restrictions, CPC licence current for the vehicle type.
- Medical renewals up to date and any changes to licence reported to line manager.
- Licence inspected every 6 months.
- Report to work on time with correct equipment.
- Wear company dress code at all times.
- Do not report for work when overtired or under influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Follow notification procedures for absence from work.
- Report all incidents promptly to the line manager.
- Participate in yearly appraisal and give feedback to line manager.
- Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures and undertake reasonable requests made by the company.
Required Qualifications
- Valid UK (or acceptable other) driver’s licence with no greater than 6 penalty points.
- Good written and spoken English language ability.
- Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
- References and identity evidence (PCV/PSV driving licence).
- Professional driving experience.
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
- Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ as required.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard.
- Valid Driver qualification Card (CPC) and Driver Card (Tacho card).
