Job purpose: A PCO owner car driver is responsible for driving their own passenger‑carrying vehicle and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS home‑to‑school services.
Department: Special Educational Needs
Reports to: Controller
Pay structure: Paid on a weekly rate.
Main Duties:
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Ensure high‑visibility PPE is always worn in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Check vehicle condition before service, keeping it clean and tidy.
- Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile‑phone use, smoking and prohibited equipment.
- Be responsible for health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers and colleagues.
- Attend safety briefings and training as required.
- Report all safety accidents/incidents to the company.
- Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
- Maintain a safe, tidy cab area.
- Provide a high standard of customer service, friendly and professional.
- Assist with additional needs of children and vulnerable adults, elderly, infirm or disabled.
- Drive vehicle safely, legally and professionally.
- Maintain the timetable, not running early or late unless safe.
- Keep up‑to‑date with road closures, diversions or special events through notices, briefings and supervisor instructions.
- Hold valid driving licence, vehicle PCO and person PCO licence available for inspection.
Driver Must Ensure That:
- The licence, vehicle PCO and person PCO licence are dated and valid for the vehicle type.
- The licence has required medical renewals.
- Any change affecting driving entitlement is communicated to line manager.
- The licence is available for inspection every six months.
- Report to work at the correct time and location with correct equipment.
- Follow company dress code when on duty.
- Avoid working when overtired or under influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Follow notification procedures for absence from work.
- Report all safety, security, driving and customer service incidents to line manager ASAP.
- Report incidents on the road that may affect service ASAP.
- Give feedback on service improvements to line manager.
- Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures.
- Undertake reasonable requests made by the company.
Work Environment:
Flexible working hours with core hours 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30. Undertake additional work as service needs dictate. Work predominantly outdoors on your own vehicle, transporting clients in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
Required Criteria:
- Valid current UK (or acceptable other) driving licence.
- No greater than 3 penalty points.
- Good understanding of written and spoken English.
- Good numeric skills (add and subtract cash).
- Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
- Provide suitable references.
- Provide proof of identity.
- Valid current Person PCO certificate.
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
- Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ as required.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard.
- Good written and verbal communication skills using English (ESOL entry level 2).
- Has the physical capability to carry out the role.

- Must pass alcohol and drugs screening as per policy.
