Job Purpose

A PCO owner car driver is responsible for driving their own passenger-carrying vehicle and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS home-to-school services.

Main Duties

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Ensure that high visibility PPE is worn in vehicle movement areas.
  • Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
  • Check vehicle condition prior to service: ensure clean and tidy.
  • Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile phones, smoking, and prohibited equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers and colleagues; attend safety briefings and training.
  • Report safety accidents/incidents to the company.
  • Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Keep cab area safe and tidy.
  • Provide high standard customer service, friendly and professional conduct.
  • Assist with additional needs of children, vulnerable adults, elderly, infirm or disabled.
  • Drive vehicle safely, legally, and professionally.
  • Maintain timetable adherence, avoid running early or late when safe.
  • Stay updated on road closures/diversions/special events via notices, briefings, supervisors.
  • Hold valid driving licence, vehicle PCO and Person PCO Licence at all times; available for inspection.

A Driver Must Ensure That

  • Your licence, vehicle PCO and Person PCO licence are valid for the vehicle type you are driving.
  • Licence medical renewals are up to date.
  • Communicate any licence changes that may affect entitlement to drive (e.g., sickness, injury, conviction).
  • Licence available for inspection every 6 months.
  • Report for work on time with correct equipment.
  • Observe company dress code.
  • Do not report for work when overtired or under influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Follow notification procedures in event of absence.
  • Report incidents (safety, security, driving, customer service) to line manager promptly.
  • Report road incidents affecting service (closures, accidents, highway repairs) as soon safe.
  • Provide feedback ideas on service improvements.
  • Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures.
  • Follow reasonable requests from company.

Work Environment

Participate in flexible working hours with core hours between 07.00 – 09.00 and 14.30 – 16.30. Undertake additional work as the service needs dictate. Follow daily and weekly work schedules and report to the Controller when incidents or problems occur. Jobholder’s usual place of work is predominantly outdoor on own vehicle transporting clients. Must work safely and efficiently in all weather, traffic and road conditions.

Required Criteria

  • Valid current UK (or acceptable other) driver’s licence
  • No greater than 3 penalty points
  • Good understanding of written and spoken English language
  • Good numeric skills (able to add and subtract cash)
  • Proven eligibility to work in the UK
  • Able to provide suitable references
  • Able to prove identity
  • Valid current Person PCO certificate
  • Basic secondary school education or equivalent
  • Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ as required
  • Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard
  • Good written and verbal communication skills using English language to ESOL entry level 2
  • Physical capability to carry out the role
