A PCO company driver is responsible for driving a passenger‑carrying vehicle and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS home‑to‑school services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Wear high‑visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
  • Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
  • Check vehicle condition prior to service, including safety walk‑round, reporting defects, and completing defect cards or entering defects on electronic machines.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and tidy before starting service.
  • Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile phones, smoking, and prohibited equipment.
  • Manage health, safety, security, welfare, environmental, and fire safety for yourself, customers, and colleagues.
  • Attend safety briefings and training as required.
  • Report all safety accidents/incidents using the company’s reporting procedure.
  • Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy bus cab area.
  • Provide a high standard of customer service, being friendly and professional.
  • Assist children and vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm, or disabled with additional needs.
  • Drive company vehicles safely, legally, and professionally; follow the timetable and avoid running early or late when safe.
  • Stay informed of road closures, diversions, or special events that may affect service by reading notices, attending briefings, or listening to supervisors.
  • Hold a valid driving licence and Person PCO Licence at all times and provide proof to line manager.

Driver Licence and PCO Licence Compliance

  • Licences are current and valid for the vehicle type.
  • Medical renewals are up-to-date.
  • Notify line manager of any changes that affect entitlement.
  • Licences are available for inspection every six months.
  • Report for work on time with correct equipment.
  • Observe company dress code.
  • Do not report to work if overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Follow notification procedures for absences.
  • Report all incidents promptly.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and give feedback to line manager.
  • Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures.

Work Environment

Flexible working hours with core hours 07:00–09:00 and 14:30–16:30. Additional work may be required as service needs dictate. The jobholder works predominantly outdoors on vehicles transporting clients across various locations, requiring safe operation in all weather, traffic, and road conditions.

Required Criteria

  • Valid UK (or acceptable other) driver’s licence, no more than three penalty points.
  • Good understanding of written and spoken English.
  • Good numeric skills for adding and subtracting cash.
  • Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
  • References and identification.
  • Valid current Person PCO certificate.
  • Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
  • Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle competently and safely.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Pass medical and enhanced CRB checks.
  • Pass alcohol and drugs screening as per policy.
