Job Purpose
To escort and assist clients with special needs, board and alight vehicles in their daily journey to and from home, school, centre or other destinations as directed.
Main Duties
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Help clients gain safe entry to the vehicle or their destination.
- Assist passengers in boarding and alighting vehicles using appropriate means, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities.
- Maintain appropriate communication with the Controller and report any problems regarding transport of a client.
- Apply health and safety standards when assisting with boarding and alighting; secure clients in seats using the required safety restraining system, and secure wheelchairs appropriately.
- Keep the vehicle interior and exterior clean and tidy and follow hygiene control standards.
- Wear personal protective equipment and uniform as required.
- Work flexible hours: core times 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30, with additional work as needed.
- Work predominantly outdoors in vehicles, handling all weather, traffic and road conditions safely.
- Have no physical or mental limitations that could interfere with safe passage of clients, passenger assistance, or emergency activities.
Daily Functions
- Operate equipment such as tail-lifts and seating restraints routinely.
- Perform health and safety/manual handling activities: pushing, lifting, carrying, and supporting clients; transfers via stairs where appropriate.
- Assist clients with dressing and emergency toileting when required.
Variations of Duties
- Address special needs of clients including mobility problems, learning difficulties, mental health problems, elderly, disabled.
- Manage different types of transport vehicles, including those adapted for disabled access.
- Adjust to varying numbers and ages of service users.
Legal Compliance
The jobholder is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and must disclose offences accordingly.
