Job Purpose

To escort and assist clients with special needs, board and alight vehicles in their daily journey to and from home, school, centre or other destinations as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Ensure that the client gains safe entry to the vehicle or their destination.
  • Assist passengers to board and alight vehicles, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with the Controller, reporting any problems regarding the transport of a client (e.g., disruptive behaviour, absenteeism, lateness).
  • Apply health and safety standards to ensure welfare of clients during boarding and alighting, including securing clients in seats with restraint systems and wheelchairs.
  • Ensure vehicles are clean and tidy, hygiene standards met, and personal protective equipment and uniform are worn.
  • Work flexible hours; core hours 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30, with additional work as required.
  • Operate in a predominantly outdoor environment, safe and efficient in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
  • Meet physical and mental capability requirements to safely assist clients and perform emergency activities.

Daily Functions

  • Operate and use equipment such as tail lifts and sitting restraints.
  • Perform manual handling: pushing, lifting, carrying and supporting clients.
  • Assistance with dressing and emergency toileting where required.

Variations of Duties

  • Special client needs (mobility problems, learning difficulties, mental health issues, elderly, disabled).
  • Type of transport, including fleet vehicles adapted for disabled access.
  • Number and age of clients may vary.

Work Dimensions

The jobholder generally follows established guidelines but may use initiative to solve basic problems. For complex issues consult the Controller or supervisor.

Role Contact

Contact with parents, guardians, carers, attendants, teachers, council staff and colleagues in a multi‑ethnic environment, providing assistance and information.

Technical Requirements

Use of mobile communications, tracking equipment, radio, telephone, messaging, GPS, etc., as required.

Required Criteria

  • Good written and spoken English.
  • Interest in self employment.
  • Ability to complete in‑house training.
