A PSV Company bus driver is responsible for driving a passenger-carrying vehicle (PCV) and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS buses.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Always wear high-visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
  • Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
  • Check the condition of the vehicle prior to commencing service by:
    • Carrying out the safety walk-round check.
    • Reporting any defect in the vehicle or equipment as soon as possible to the appropriate person.
    • Completing the Vehicle Defect Card or entering the defect on the electronic ticket machine (depending on location).
    • Ensuring that the vehicle is clean and tidy before starting service.
  • Comply with the laws and company regulations regarding the use of mobile phones, smoking in company vehicles, and the use of prohibited equipment whilst on duty.
  • Be responsible for health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers, and colleagues.
  • Report all safety accidents/incidents using the company’s reporting procedure.
  • Be fully familiar with emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Keep the bus cab area safe and tidy.
  • Provide a high standard of customer service.
  • Inform customers of road closures and diversions as needed.
  • Behave in a friendly and professional manner to customers and colleagues.
  • Recognise and assist with the additional needs of children and vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled.
  • Drive the company’s vehicle safely, legally, and professionally.
  • Adhere to the timetable, running early or late only when safe.
  • Keep up to date with road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service.
  • Hold a valid driving licence, CPC licence and be available for inspection by a company staff member at all times.

Work Environment:

  • The driver’s licence is a D1 category with no restrictions and CPC licence is in date and valid for the vehicle type.
  • Report for work at the correct time and location with the correct equipment.
  • Observe the company dress code at all times while on duty.
  • Do not report for work when overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Follow relevant notification procedures in the event of absence from work.
  • Report all safety, security, driving and customer service incidents to the line manager as soon as possible.
  • Participate in working flexible hours; general core working hours are between 07:00 – 09:00 and 14:30 – 16:30.
  • Undertake additional work as the service needs dictate.

Required Criteria:

  • Valid current UK (or acceptable other) driver’s licence.
  • No greater than 6 penalty points.
  • Good understanding of written and spoken English Language.
  • Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Able to provide suitable references.
  • Able to prove their identity with PCV/PSV driving licence.
  • Professional driving experience.
  • Has received 7 hours of DCPC training each year.
  • Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
  • Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ as required.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills using English Language to ESOL entry level 2.
