Job Purpose: A PSV Company bus driver operates a passenger‑carrying vehicle (PCV) safely and provides a high standard of customer service across the HATS network.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and during handover.
- Wear high‑visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Carry out a pre‑service safety walk‑round, report any defects, complete the Vehicle Defect Card or log defects electronically, and keep the vehicle clean and tidy.
- Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile phones, smoking, and prohibited equipment while on duty.
- Report safety accidents/incidents using the company’s procedure and understand emergency and evacuation plans.
- Maintain the cab area in a safe and tidy condition.
- Provide a high standard of customer service, giving passengers information about road closures, diversions or special events.
- Treat customers and colleagues with friendliness and professionalism.
- Recognise and assist with the additional needs of children, vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled.
- Drive the company’s vehicles safely, legally and professionally, following the timetable without running early or late when it is safe to do so.
- Keep up to date with road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service.
- Maintain a valid driving licence and CPC licence at all times and make them available for inspection.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, with flexible hours. Core times are 07:00–09:00 and 14:30–16:30; additional shifts may be required as service demands dictate. The driver follows daily and weekly work schedules and reports to the Controller when incidents or problems occur.
Work Environment & Safety:
- Driver’s licence must be category D1 with no restrictions; CPC licence must be current.
- Licence must have required medical renewals up to date and any changes (e.g., sickness, injury, conviction) must be communicated to the line manager.
- Licence is available for inspection every six months.
- Report for work at the correct time and location with the correct equipment.
- Observe the company dress code at all times.
- Do not report for work when overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Follow notification procedures for absence from work.
- Report all safety, security, driving and customer‑service incidents to the line manager as soon as possible.
- Report any road incidents that could impact the service (e.g., road closures, accidents, emergencies, highway repairs).
- Participate in a yearly appraisal.
- Provide feedback to the line manager on service improvements.
- Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures.
- Undertake any reasonable request made by the company.
Required Criteria:
- Valid current UK (or equivalent) driving licence.
- No greater than 6 penalty points.
- Good written and spoken English.
- Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
- Provide suitable references.
- Prove identity via driving licence.
- Professional driving experience.
- Receive 7 hours of DCPC training each year.
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
- Prepared to undertake further training (e.g., NVQ) as required.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard.
- Good written and verbal communication skills (ESOL entry level 2).
