We have an opportunity for a PCO Owner Car Driver to join our team.
Job Purpose
A PCO owner car driver is responsible for driving their own passenger-carrying vehicle and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the HATS home-to-school services network.
About The Role
Main duties
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Wear high-visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Check the condition of the vehicle prior to commencing service.
- Keep the vehicle clean and tidy before starting service.
- Comply with the laws and company regulations regarding mobile phone use, smoking, and prohibited equipment in vehicles.
- Be responsible for the health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers, and colleagues.
- Attend safety briefings and training as required.
- Report all safety accidents/incidents to the company.
- Underpin a full understanding of emergency and evacuation plans.
- Maintain a safe and tidy cab area.
- Provide a high standard of customer service at all times.
- Offer customers useful information during the journey (e.g., road closures, diversions).
- Behave friendly and professionally towards customers and colleagues.
- Recognise and assist children, vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled with additional needs.
- Drive the vehicle safely, legally, and professionally.
- Adhere to the set timetable, avoiding early or late departures when safe to do so.
- Stay up-to-date on road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service.
- Maintain a valid driving licence, vehicle PCO and Person PCO licence at all times and be ready for inspection by company staff.
A Driver Must Ensure That
- The driver’s licence, vehicle PCO and Person PCO licence are current and valid for the vehicle type being driven.
- Required medical renewals are up to date.
- Any licence changes that may affect driving eligibility are communicated to the line manager.
- The licence is available for inspection every 6 months.
- Attend work on time, in the correct location, and with the required equipment.
- Always observe company dress code.
- Do not report for work when overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Follow notification procedures for absences from work.
- Report all safety, security, driving and customer service incidents to the line manager promptly.
- Report incidents that may affect the service (e.g., road closures, accidents, emergencies) as soon as it is safe to do so.
- Provide feedback to the line manager on service improvement ideas.
- Adhere to HATS policies and procedures.
- Carry out any reasonable requests made by the company.
Work Environment
Work includes flexible hours with core periods between 07.00–09.00 and 14.30–16.30, with additional work as service needs dictate. The day-to-day work is primarily outdoors on the driver’s own PCO vehicle, transporting clients in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
Required Criteria
- Valid current UK (or acceptable other) drivers licence
- No more than 3 penalty points
- Good understanding of written and spoken English
- Good numeric skills (ability to add and subtract cash)
- Proof of eligibility to work in the UK
- Suitable references available
- Proof of identity available
- Valid Person PCO certificate
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent
- Prepared to undertake training such as an NVQ as required
- Ability to drive vehicles to a competent and safe standard
- Good written and verbal communication skills at ESOL entry level 2
- Physical capability to perform the role
