Job Description

Location: Unit 1, Stockholm Road

The HATS Group is the UK\’s foremost private healthcare provider, excelling in patient‑centric transport services with an \’Outstanding\’ rating for Responsiveness from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC was established under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as an independent regulator. It is responsible for the registration, inspection and monitoring of health and social care providers. HATS Group are a provider of Private Ambulances, and this activity is regulated by the CQC.

HATS Group are also regulated by Local Authorities for services delivered under SEND. Recognised for professionalism, excellence, and a fleet of over 800 vehicles, we support various public and private healthcare institutions, delivering over 2,000,000 passenger movements annually.

Main Duties

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Wear high‑visibility PPE at all times within vehicle movement areas.
  • Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
  • Check the condition of the vehicle prior to commencing service, including a safety walk round check.
  • Report any defect in the vehicle or equipment to the appropriate person and complete the Vehicle Defect Card or enter the defect on the electronic ticket machine.
  • Ensure the vehicle is clean and tidy before starting service.
  • Comply with laws and company regulations regarding the use of mobile phones, smoking in company vehicles and prohibited equipment (e.g., game consoles) while on duty.
  • Take responsibility for the health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers and colleagues.
  • Attend safety briefings and training as required.
  • Report all safety accidents/incidents using the company’s reporting procedure.
  • Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Maintain the bus cab area in a safe and tidy condition.
  • Provide a high standard of customer service, behaving in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Assist children and vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled as needed.
  • Drive safely, legally and professionally, on the set timetable without running early or late when safe.
  • Stay informed about road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service through notices, briefings and supervisor instructions.
  • Hold a valid driving licence and Person PCO licence at all times, available for inspection by company staff.

A Driver Must Ensure That

  • Their driving licence and Person PCO licence are in date and valid for the vehicle type they are driving.
  • Their licence has the required medical renewals up to date.
  • Any change affecting their entitlement to drive is communicated to their line manager.
  • The licence is available for inspection in every six‑month period.
  • They report to work at the correct time and location with the correct equipment.
  • They observe the company dress code at all times while on duty.
  • They do not report for work when overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • They follow the notification procedures when absent from work.
  • They report all safety, security, driving and customer service incidents to the line manager as soon as possible.
  • They report incidents on the road likely to affect the service (e.g., road closures, accidents, emergencies) as soon as it is safe.
  • They take part in a yearly appraisal.
  • They provide feedback on how services can be improved to their line manager.
  • They adhere to all HATS policies and procedures.
  • They undertake any reasonable request made by the company.

Work Environment

Participate in flexible working hours with core hours from 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30. Additional work may be required as service needs dictate. The job holder follows instructed daily and weekly schedules and is required to report to the Controller where incidents or problems occur.

The usual place of work is predominantly outdoors on vehicles that transport clients from and to various locations. Safe and efficient operation is required in all weather, traffic and road conditions.

Required Criteria

  • Valid current UK (or acceptable other) driving licence
  • No greater than 3 penalty points
  • Good understanding of written and spoken English language
  • Good numeric skills (able to add and subtract cash)
  • Proven eligibility to work in the UK
  • Able to provide suitable references
  • Able to prove identity
  • Valid current Person PCO certificate
  • Basic secondary school education or equivalent
  • Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ as required
  • Ability to drive a vehicle to a competent and safe standard
  • Good written and verbal communication skills using English language to ESOL entry level 2
  • Has the physical capability to carry out the role
