We have an opportunity for a Passenger Assistant to join our team.

About The Role

Job purpose: To escort and assist clients with special needs, board and alight vehicles in their daily journey to and from home, school, centre or other destinations as directed.

Position in the Organisation Chart: Team leader > Controller > Passenger Assistant.

Main duties

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Ensure that the client gains safe entry to either the vehicle or their destination.
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of transport users throughout the journey and handover from and to: residence/parent/guardian/carer; primary helper at school; or to care assistants at centres. Assist passengers to board and alight vehicles using appropriate means, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with the Controller, reporting any problems regarding transport of a client (e.g., disruptive behaviour, absenteeism, lateness).
  • Apply health and safety standards to ensure the welfare of clients, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities and/or varying medical conditions (particularly when using tail-lifts), securing clients in seats with the requisite safety restraints, and ensuring wheelchairs are correctly secured to retaining mechanisms or securing points within the vehicle.
  • Be responsible, along with the driver, for keeping the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and tidy to required standards, including hygiene control. Wear necessary personal protective equipment and uniform as required.
  • Participate in flexible working hours with core hours typically 07:00–09:00 and 14:30–16:30. Undertake additional work as service needs dictate. Report incidents or problems to the Controller following instructed daily and weekly work schedules.
  • Work in a predominantly outdoor environment on vehicles that transport clients to various locations, and operate safely in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
  • The jobholder must not have any physical or mental limitations that could interfere with safe passage of clients, passenger assistance, or emergency activities.

Daily Functions Of This Role Include

  • Operating and using appropriate techniques and equipment, e.g., tail lifts and seating restraints, as part of daily routine.
  • Health and safety/manual handling activities, including pushing, lifting, carrying and supporting clients to and from vehicles, including transfers via stairs where reasonable and appropriate.
  • Assistance with dressing and emergency toileting for identified clients.

Variations

Variations of duties will depend on the needs of service users/clients, such as:

  • Special needs of clients (mobility problems, learning difficulties, mental health problems, elderly, disabled).
  • Types of transport operating – fleet vehicles, including those adapted for disabled access.
  • Numbers and ages of service users/clients will vary.

Work Environment and Risks

The work may involve a substantial risk to personal safety due to day-to-day activities. The role generally works within established guidelines, procedures and systems; on rare occasions, initiative may be required to solve basic problems related to escorting clients (e.g., manoeuvring clients when boarding/alighting). For more complex issues, consult the Controller or other HATS supervisor.

Role and Contacts

The role has contact with parents, guardians, carers, attendants, teachers, centre organisers, Council staff and other HATS employees in a multi-ethnic environment, providing information or assistance to:

  • Clients of Transport Services
  • Staff of centres or schools
  • Parents/guardians or primary helpers

May occasionally deal with issues related to contacts and relationships where outcomes are not straightforward. Strong interpersonal skills are required.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act – The jobholder is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and is required to disclose offences accordingly.

The jobholder may be required to use mobile communications, tracking equipment, radio, telephone, messaging, GPS (but not limited to) and is accountable only for the use of equipment/resources associated with normal daily activities.
