HATS Group is a provider of Private Ambulances, regulated by the CQC and Local Authorities for services delivered under SEND.
We have an opportunity for a Passenger Assistant to join our team. The working hours for this role are daily: 07:00 – 10:00 and 14:00 – 17:00. This is a 16 hour contract.
Job purpose: To escort and assist clients with special needs, helping them board and alight vehicles in their daily journey to and from home, school, centre or other destinations as directed.
Main duties:
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Ensure the client gains safe entry to the vehicle or their destination.
- Maintain safety and wellbeing of transport users throughout the journey and handover from/to residence/guardian/carer; assist passengers to board and alight using appropriate means, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities.
- Maintain appropriate communication with the Controller regarding transport issues (e.g., disruptive behaviour, absenteeism, lateness).
- Apply health and safety standards to ensure client welfare, including assistance with boarding/alighting, securing seats with restraints, and securing wheelchairs to appropriate points in the vehicle.
- Keep the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and tidy to required standards, including hygiene controls; wear necessary PPE and uniform.
- Participate in flexible hours, with core hours between 07:00-09:00 and 14:30-16:30; undertake additional work as service needs dictate; report incidents or problems to the Controller.
- Work primarily outdoors on vehicles transporting clients to various locations; operate in a safe and efficient manner in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
- Must not have any physical or mental limitations that would interfere with safe passenger escort and emergency activities.
Daily Functions Of This Role Include:
- Operate and use equipment such as tail lifts and seating restraints as part of daily routine.
- Perform health and safety/manual handling tasks including pushing, lifting, carrying and assisting clients in transfers to/from vehicles, including transfers via stairs where reasonable and appropriate.
- Provide assistance with dressing and emergency toileting for identified clients when required.
Variations of duties depend on the needs of the service users/clients, such as:
- Special needs of clients (mobility problems, learning difficulties, mental health issues, elderly, disabled).
- Types of transport operating – fleet vehicles, including those adapted for disabled access.
- Numbers and ages of service users/clients will vary.
The work may involve substantial risk to personal safety arising from day-to-day activities.
Work Dimensions: The jobholder generally works within established guidelines, but may be required to use initiative for basic problems/situations related to escorting clients (e.g., manoeuvring when boarding/alighting). For more complex issues, the Controller or other HATS supervisor should be consulted.
Role: The role involves contact with parents, guardians, carers, attendants, teachers, centre organisers, Council Staff and other HATS employees in a multi-ethnic environment, providing information or assistance to:
- Clients of Transport Services
- Staff of centres or schools
- Parents/guardians or primary helpers
The jobholder is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and may be required to disclose offences accordingly. The jobholder may be required to use mobile communications, tracking equipment, radio, telephone, messaging, GPS (and other devices) and is accountable for the use of equipment/resources associated with normal daily activities.
