Hatch is currently seeking an experienced lead with a background in container terminal planning to join our dynamic and growing UK Ports & Terminals (P&T) team. In this role you will lead and coordinate terminal planning, optimization, modernization engagements and business development pursuits throughout the UK and Europe focused on all major terminal operators, shipping lines and railroads. The position is based in London, England. Reporting to the Regional Manager, as the successful candidate you will deliver high‑quality planning and engineering services, including the development of long‑range port master plans and terminal expansion or optimization strategies. You will also be responsible for project setup, the delivery of work packages, and cross‑disciplinary coordination for both brownfield and greenfield container terminal projects.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Engagement Manager and Lead Planner on port and terminal engagements.
- Lead multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Carry out peer reviews of ongoing technical packages as required.
- Estimate level of effort for tasks and manage to budget.
- Promote and support technical excellence and quality of work.
- Support constructability and safety reviews of projects.
- Develop client relations.
- Track and follow markets and opportunities in the region & sector.
- Promote Hatch’s extensive project design and delivery services with clients.
- Provide input and strategy to proposal preparation.
- Be aware of industry technical requirements, trends and opportunities.
- Connection and visibility with industry business and technical leaders.
- Lead and participate in professional excellence groups.
- Identify and develop knowledge of junior staff.
- Assist with staff development and recruitment.
Qualifications
- University degree in transportation planning, or a degree in civil, marine, or mechanical engineering.
- 15 years’ experience with similar engagements.
- Experience in executing planning and layout assignments, terminal capacity assessments, debottlenecking and optimization studies as well as familiarity with business improvement and optimization engagements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team of professionals across multiple concurrent engagements.
- Deep familiarity with the maritime industry, common cargoes (e.g., containers, Ro/Ro, bulk, breakbulk, and project cargo), and a variety of marine facilities (e.g., container terminals, cruise terminals, bulk material handling facilities, offshore wind support facilities, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience with freight transportation and logistics networks, including, specifically, the interconnection between ports and marine terminals and steamship lines, Class I railroads, and trucking companies.
- An entrepreneurial “can do” attitude with an ability to work toward solutions despite real world constraints of limited time and information.
