Welcome to Hastings Direct. We’re a digital insurance provider with a clear strategy to become the best and biggest player in the UK market. As a company, we’ve made huge investments in our technology, pricing, data and analytics capabilities over the past few years, along with nurturing our 4Cs culture and substantial investment in our people.

Role Purpose:

As an Analytics Engineer in the Telematics Engineering team, you’ll play a key role in transforming raw telematics data into high-quality, productionised features that power pricing, underwriting, and data science workstreams. Sitting at the intersection of data engineering and analytics, you’ll design, build, and maintain scalable data models and pipelines that enable teams across Hastings to unlock value from telematics data. You’ll work closely with Data Engineers, Analysts, and Data Scientists, within a modern data platform (Snowflake, Azure, dbt) to deliver high-impact data products. These features directly influence pricing accuracy, risk assessment and the fairness of outcomes for millions of customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines to process telematics (sensor/driver behaviour) data.
  • Develop and manage feature pipelines to create curated datasets for pricing and modelling use-cases.
  • Transform raw data into clean, reliable, and analytics-ready data models using SQL and dbt.
  • Own datasets end-to-end, including testing, reliability and documentation.
  • Optimise performance of queries and data models within cloud data warehouse environments.
  • Support self-service analytics and feature engineering through well-designed data products.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the Telematics data ecosystem and feature engineering capabilities.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced SQL skills (complex transformations, performance optimisation) and experience working with large-scale datasets.
  • Hands-on experience with dbt (or similar transformation frameworks).
  • Experience with version control (Git).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to data quality.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with telematics / IoT / event-stream data.
  • Exposure to insurance, pricing, or risk modelling domains.
  • Experience with Python and CI/CD practices for data processing and pipeline development.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Azure, Databricks).

How You’ll Work:

  • Collaborate to enable teams across the business to build meaningful telematics-derived features.
  • Work in an agile setup, contributing to both ad-hoc and strategic initiatives.
  • Engage with stakeholders across the business to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Help shape best practices in analytics engineering within telematics.

Benefits:

  • Flexible working – we champion a flexible hybrid working approach.
  • Competitive bonus scheme - all colleagues are eligible for our annual 4Cs performance bonus.
  • Financial wellbeing – life assurance cover, income protection, and matched pension contributions up to 10%.
  • Mental wellbeing programme – access to mental health support and resources.
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, with options to buy or sell leave.
  • Access to health care cash back plans, dental plans, and discounted health assessments.
  • Social events throughout the year and much more.
