An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within Haslington Surgery. As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants (GPA) provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks combined with basic clinical duties. GPAs are trained to undertake routine administration and basic clinical duties. They can help to free up GPs' time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients' experience in the surgery; improve patient access and release highly qualified staff to concentrate on treating and managing patients with more complex conditions; improve patient flow within surgery hours, increasing the time efficiency of appointments, and reduction of waiting times; supporting patient experience by translating or reiterating information from the GP. Salary: Is negotiable - based on experience in this role, or a Health Care Assistant role.

Working hours: 27 hrs a week - covering Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week. Working hours are 9:00am to 6:30pm, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch.

Main duties of the job

  • Administration Job Responsibilities:
    • Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions.
    • Dealing with routine clinical post directly e.g. DNA letters.
    • Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.
    • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients.
    • Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
    • Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies.
    • Completion of other role appropriate administration duties, agreed with the Practice Manager.
  • Clinical Job Responsibilities:
    • Support the GP with immunisations/wound care.
    • Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, clinical observations, urinalysis, ECGs, phlebotomy, health checks, chaperoning duties.
    • Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history, observations, and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
    • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses.
    • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording.
    • Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation.
    • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms.
    • Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.
    • Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted.

About us

Haslington Surgery is a two Partner practice, located in a small village in Cheshire. We have a clinical team including Salaried GPs, Lead Nurse, two Nurses, Nurse Associate, GPA, Care Coordinators, Clinical Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician and Social Prescriber. This is supported by a Practice Manager and Senior Receptionist working with a small administration and reception team. We form part of the local SMASH PCN group of Surgeries, working together to focus on local patient care and to deliver local services. Together we are a friendly team who work closely and meet on a regular basis to promote continuous learning and professional development for all. We have a flexible approach and will consider flexibility to working hours. We are supportive of professional development and pride ourselves on supporting peer support for these new roles whilst working in a supportive and friendly environment. The Practice has a commitment to excellent patient care, quality improvement and learning. It is expected that all members of our team are actively committed to supporting these aims and participate in relevant activities when appropriate.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications:
    • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
    • Phlebotomy accredited.
    • Immunisation and Vaccination accredited.
  • Experience:
    • Experience of working directly in a healthcare assistant role, adult health, and social care, learning support or public health/health improvement (including unpaid work).
    • Experience working within a GP Practice.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of Clinical Governance skill.
    • Health and Safety Awareness.
    • Basic first aid knowledge.
