About HLK
Haseltine Lake Kempner is a well-established and highly-regarded firm of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys with offices in London, Munich, Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow. We secure intellectual property rights for prominent national and international companies as well as highly creative start-up businesses. All our clients are at the forefront of technological development in the electronics, engineering, chemical and biotechnology sectors.
We are seeking talented and motivated students to join us for an internship programme. Are you thinking of a career as a patent attorney and eager to gain practical experience in the field? If so, read on.
Who are we?
We are an IP powerhouse comprising over 200 people in 6 locations, providing a full suite of IP services advising across the globe and in all technical and scientific disciplines. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Our business ethos is all about great client service and we can only deliver that by being a great employer.
What can you expect during the internship?
As an Intellectual Property Intern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our team of IP attorneys and professionals. This internship program is designed to provide you with both hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of IP Law via classroom-based learning, similar to the training provided to our trainee attorneys when enrolled at our HLK Academy.
What exactly do patent attorneys do?
We secure intellectual property rights for prominent companies as well as highly creative start-up businesses. Our clients include many well-known household and industrial names and are at the forefront of technological development in the electronics, engineering, chemical and biotechnology sectors.
At the core of the job is the preparation of patent applications on behalf of clients. This involves understanding an invention, distilling it down to its key features and then writing a very clear and broad-based description of it, such that a Patent Examiner will be persuaded to grant a patent. Around that core skill, a Patent Attorney will be called upon to advise clients on all aspects of patent procedures, on international patent protection and on effective patent strategies.
Some of the things we love about our jobs are:
- The opportunity to apply your science or engineering degree to a wide cross-section of clients and technologies.
- Continuing intellectual challenge - you never stop learning.
- Excellent career opportunities and financial rewards.
- The international aspects of work providing ample opportunity to travel.
How to apply
Your application is formed of your CV and cover letter. The deadline is 5pm 22 May. While we understand that AI can be a helpful tool to assist you in your application, it should not be used as a sole source. The evident sole or heavy use of AI will reflect poorly on your application. This opportunity is aimed at penultimate-year students, or those interested in joining HLK as a trainee attorney in September 2027. We’re keen to get to know you, and for you to get to know us, through our internship programme, which also provides a pathway to future trainee opportunities.
