About the Role:

Harvey Nash's client is seeking a Firewall Engineer to support a significant infrastructure insourcing programme, with an initial focus on discovery and documentation of the existing firewall estate, followed by hands-on support of the firewall environment as part of Business As Usual (BAU) operations and project delivery.

The role will be primarily focused on the management, support, and evolution of a firewall estate comprising both virtual and physical Check Point firewalls, including environments hosted on-premises and in the cloud. While firewall technologies will form the core day-to-day responsibility, broader networking skills are desirable to support effective troubleshooting, integration, and project delivery. This role is critical to enabling a successful transition from incumbent suppliers to an in-house operating model, ensuring knowledge is captured, documented, and embedded within the business.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including logical designs, rule sets, policies, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Provide hands-on engineering support for the BAU operation of the firewall estate, including incident resolution, service requests, and operational enhancements.
  • Deliver firewall-related changes and project work, ensuring adherence to change management processes, security standards, and architectural principles.
  • Manage, configure, and maintain Check Point firewall platforms (physical, virtual, and cloud-based), including policy management, upgrades, and lifecycle activities.
  • Collaborate with internal infrastructure, security, and project teams to support wider network and security initiatives.
  • Support security compliance and audit activities, including evidencing controls and supporting remediation activities where required.
  • Work closely with third parties and incumbent suppliers during transition activities to ensure effective knowledge transfer.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement service improvements to enhance the security, stability, and operational efficiency of the firewall estate.
  • Plan and assist with firewall upgrades, including software, hardware, and platform upgrades, ensuring minimal service disruption and alignment with company standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of firewall and network security processes, tooling, and standards.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience working as a Firewall Engineer within a complex enterprise environment.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Check Point firewalls, including policy design, implementation, and operational support.
  • Experience with both physical and virtual firewall platforms, including cloud-hosted firewall environments.
  • Experience supporting firewall services across both operational (BAU) and project-based workstreams.
  • Strong documentation skills, with experience capturing as-is environments and producing clear, structured technical documentation.
  • Good understanding of network security principles, firewall architectures, and secure network design.
  • Ability to work effectively during transition and change programmes, including engagement with third-party suppliers.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Broader networking experience (e.g. routing, switching, and network troubleshooting).
  • Experience working within large, regulated, or critical national infrastructure environments.
  • Experience supporting hybrid on-premises and cloud-based environments.
  • Familiarity with IT service management processes and formal change control frameworks.
  • Ideally, candidates will already hold Security Check (SC) clearance. Candidates without existing SC clearance must be eligible and willing to undergo SC clearance, with client sponsoring the process.

This role has been deemed Inside IR35 by the client. Applicants must hold, or be happy to apply for, a valid Basic Disclosure Scotland.
