Ready to step into a Legal Counsel role where your expertise directly influences business decisions? If you’re a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys variety, responsibility and scaling your knowledge of legal processes, this Legal Counsel role in Leeds is an excellent opportunity to take the next step in your in-house legal career.

A leading insurance provider is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its growing in-house legal team. This is an opportunity to work closely with senior stakeholders, provide pragmatic commercial advice, and play a key role in supporting an evolving organisation.

As Legal Counsel, you’ll act as a trusted adviser across this company, supporting a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational matters. You’ll help to manage legal risk and improve processes while partnering with senior leadership and key internal stakeholders.

You’ll enjoy a varied and high-impact workload as a Legal Counsel, including:

  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial and technology contracts,
  • Advising on legal and regulatory matters and developments affecting the business, including data protection (GDPR) and digital laws (DORA),
  • Managing legal risk, disputes and liaison with suppliers and third parties,
  • Supporting data protection governance and responding to incidents or breaches,
  • Providing legal input to compliance and senior management, including Board-level reporting,
  • Delivering legal training, guidance and updates to the business,
  • Managing intellectual property matters and supporting company secretarial activities.

To succeed in this Legal Counsel role, you will ideally bring:

  • At least three years of post-qualification experience as a Solicitor in the UK.
  • The ability to work autonomously, managing a varied workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills, with the ability to liaise with senior stakeholders.
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts within the financial services or insurance sectors.
  • Knowledge of contract law, with experience of GDPR and regulated environments (tech and property law knowledge desirable).

The working environment: You’ll join a commercially driven organisation that values clear, pragmatic legal advice. Working independently from the General Counsel (based in London), you’ll have the autonomy to manage your own portfolio of matters while influencing senior stakeholders. This is a chance to broaden your expertise, take ownership of key projects, and play a pivotal role in driving the business’s growth.
