Job Summary

Hartree Partners is seeking a Trading Assistant on our Metals Trading team in London. This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated junior with middle or back office experience to gain exposure to the metals markets within a dynamic global trading environment. The successful candidate will work closely with traders, originators, and other analysts to support commercial decision-making through market analysis, data management, and performance reporting. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical ability, attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine interest in global commodities markets.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sit directly on the trading desk alongside senior traders, gaining real-time exposure to risk-taking, position management, and market flow across global metals markets.
  • Own the trade lifecycle from your seat — book trades, manage confirms, and coordinate with middle office to keep the book clean and P&L accurate.
  • Build, maintain, and sharpen the desk's internal models, databases, and dashboards.
  • Push the frontier on AI/LLM integration: automate repetitive workflows, accelerate research pipelines, and build tools that give our desk an edge.
  • Produce daily and weekly market intelligence — concise, high-signal reports on price action, spreads, regional dynamics, and macro drivers.
  • Support live trading with ad hoc analysis: pricing structures, spread relationships, arb opportunities — whatever the desk needs, fast.
  • Liaise across middle and back office to ensure trade data, exposure reporting, and performance attribution are bulletproof.
  • Develop deep market knowledge across base metals, precious metals, and the macro landscape — geopolitics, supply chains, central bank policy — everything that moves markets.

Education & Experience

  • Degree in engineering, mathematics, economics, finance, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience in commodities, trading, or a market-facing analytical role preferred, but not essential.
  • Strong Python experience applied to real-world data analysis and tool building.
  • Advanced Excel skills for practical trading desk use.
