Role Overview
As an HR Adviser, you will provide proactive and professional HR support across our schools, children's residential settings and adults' residential services. Acting as a trusted adviser to managers, you will support the full employee lifecycle, ensuring people practices align with organisational values, safeguarding responsibilities, safer recruitment requirements and employment legislation. A key focus of the role is managing employee relations casework, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, performance, attendance and wellbeing matters. You will also support recruitment, onboarding, workforce compliance, policy development and management coaching, helping to create a positive, safe and high performing culture across the organisation. Working closely with leaders and safeguarding colleagues, you will ensure that people related decisions are fair, consistent, legally compliant and focused on achieving the best outcomes for the children, young people, adults and colleagues we support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert HR advice and guidance to managers across a range of employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, absence management, performance, conduct and probation.
- Lead and support HR investigations, formal meetings and hearings, ensuring fair, consistent and legally compliant processes.
- Monitor and advise on sickness absence, wellbeing, occupational health referrals and reasonable adjustments.
- Support safer recruitment processes, including pre-employment checks, onboarding and workforce compliance requirements.
- Advise on safeguarding-related employment matters, working closely with safeguarding leads and senior leaders where concerns arise regarding suitability to work with children, young people or vulnerable adults.
- Ensure compliance with employment legislation, HR policies, safeguarding requirements and sector regulations.
- Coach and support managers to build confidence and capability in managing people issues effectively.
- Maintain accurate employee records, HR data and compliance documentation, including recruitment and safeguarding records.
- Produce HR reports and workforce insights to identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Contribute to policy development, HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen organisational culture and employee engagement.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience (at least 3 years) in an HR Adviser or HR Officer role, with strong employee relations and case management experience.
- Experience managing disciplinary, grievance, capability, absence management and investigation processes.
- Good understanding of UK employment law, HR best practice and fair process.
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles and safer recruitment requirements, ideally within education, care, health or other regulated environments.
- Experience supporting recruitment, onboarding and workforce compliance activities.
- CIPD Level 3 or above (or working towards) is desirable however real, lived experience is equally as important.
- Excellent communication, organisational and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to influence and challenge constructively.
- Professional, resilient and solutions-focused, with the ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion and integrity.
