We are seeking a Level 5 qualified Deputy Manager to join our residential service in Corse Lawn (applications from candidates with relevant experience and alternative qualifications will also be considered). In this key role, you will support the effective management of the home, ensuring high-quality care and a nurturing environment where children and young people can thrive.
The role is typically Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm, but flexibility is required to meet the needs of the home, including occasional evenings, nights, weekends, and participation in the paid on-call rota.
Role Overview
- Assist the Registered Manager in meeting the home’s Statement of Purpose, with particular emphasis on providing a person-centred therapeutic service, through delivering and improving all operational aspects of the home and developing a skilled and effective team.
- Respond to the directives of the Senior Management team to ensure a coherent and consistent home management strategy across the Company.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the home provides a safe and nurturing environment for the children, in which they can develop life skills, build relationships, gain qualifications and prepare for adulthood.
- Assist the Registered Manager in maintaining the highest standards of care possible within the guidelines, policies and procedures of Genesis CTE, in addition to all relevant legislation, working towards positive and measurable outcomes for every child, every time.
- Act as the lynchpin between the Registered Manager and the therapeutic team to ensure that each placement is effective from start to finish, taking into account each child’s individual needs and educational goals.
- Ensure each child has an effective key worker, and that there is regular formal and informal consultation with all the children regarding the running of the home and their individual Plans.
- Work closely with and through the Senior Therapeutic Care Workers, ensuring effective shift planning and handovers take place, and a consistent approach is adopted throughout the home for the children and care team, regularly observing at different times of the day and week.
- Lead the therapeutic care team through clear guidance at team meetings, acting as a positive role model, providing coaching and feedback, identifying training needs, contributing to supervisions and appraisals, creating a reflective and learning approach, and managing performance (in liaison with the Registered Manager and HR Department as appropriate).
- Plan and manage staff rotas effectively, ensuring an appropriate mix of skills and experience on each shift, giving careful consideration to all leave requests in conjunction with home plans and risk assessments, and liaising with other homes as required to share resources.
- Coordinate and supervise all aspects of team members’ induction and training in liaison with the HR Department, undertaking detailed forward planning, ensuring time is allocated appropriately, appointing “mentors” as required, and monitoring progress to meet and sustain the required competencies.
- Oversee all aspects of food hygiene within the home, ensuring temperature checks are carried out as required and best practice is followed in terms of food preparation and storage.
- Ensure the provision of a healthy, balanced diet and a varied menu, with reference to individual children’s placement plan requirements as appropriate.
- Oversee the housekeeping standards in the home, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness is maintained at all times and a fair allocation of duties through the rota.
- Oversee the maintenance of the home, both externally (including garden) and internally (including soft furnishings), liaising with the Registered Manager and maintenance team as necessary to resolve any issues, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment at all times.
- Oversee the planning of children’s activities in the home, ensuring they are compatible with staffing rotas, meal times, individual children’s plans, budgets and current risk assessments, and also that they are agreed in community meetings and adhered to.
- Ensure the storage, administration and record keeping in relation to medication complies with the policy guidelines and safety standards, and that only fully trained team members are delegated responsibility.
- Monitor all aspects of record keeping, ensuring all required documentation is maintained accurately, objectively legibly and maintained completely up-to-date.
- Manage the home’s budget efficiently and effectively, following good practices for purchasing and stock control, ensuring it is correctly allocated and reconciled, and obtaining best value for money.
- Monitor all aspects of Health, Safety and Welfare within the home, ensuring all team members are aware of the policy and procedures (including fire procedures, COSHH, and accident reporting), and that they are followed at all times.
- Work closely with the Registered Manager to utilise and follow up all internal and external inspection findings, implementing recommendations promptly to improve the effectiveness of the home.
- Contribute to the overall performance of Genesis CTE, the achievement of our mission statement and the development of our service, through the sharing of good practice, attendance at relevant meetings, and close working relationships with peers across the organisation.
- Proactively maintain personal, continuous professional development, undertaking further reading and training as required (including statutory refreshers) and keeping up-to-date with changes in the profession.
- Deputise for the Registered Manager in their absence, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, and undertake “on-call” duties as required.

What We're Looking For
Qualifications
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (Grade C minimum in both Maths and English).
- NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) or equivalent.
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare or equivalent.
Experience
- Demonstrable and considerable experience in residential care settings for children, including at least 2 out of the last 5 years.
- Demonstrable experience of leading and supervising teams, supporting and mentoring learning, and managing performance.
- Previous experience as an Assistant/Deputy Manager in a similar setting.
Knowledge and understanding
- OFSTED/CCSIW/CQC regulations and operating standards.
- Safeguarding Children.
- Operating processes and documentation requirements of a residential home.
- Child Development, Attachment Theory and therapeutic approaches to childcare.
- Health & Safety including food hygiene.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrable supervisory success, with ability to lead, motivate and develop teams.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to coach and delegate effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to be tactful and diplomatic, and manage professional relationships effectively.
- ICT literate and fully competent in the use of all MS Office software.
- Good organisational and administrative skills, with a methodical approach and strong attention to detail.
- Logical and pragmatic approach to problem solving.
- Right to work in the UK.
- Enhanced DBS clearance (company funded).
- 21 years of age or older (in line with regulatory requirements).
