As a Community Bus Driver, the person appointed is the public face of the service. It is essential that they are a good ambassador for the Council, have a good deal of common sense, are presentable, approachable, polite, helpful and patient. The successful applicant must be capable of clear thinking in the event of an emergency and able to work under pressure.
Overall Responsibilities
Reporting to the Community Bus Administrator, the Community Bus Driver is an employee of the Parish Council and is responsible for ensuring the smooth implementation and execution of the Community Bus Service. The Community Bus Driver is expected to liaise with their Line Manager on all matters regarding the driving of the vehicle and in particular reporting matters pertaining to passenger, driver and vehicle safety.
Specific Responsibilities
- To contribute to the daily operation of the Hartley Wintney Parish Council (HWPC) Community Bus.
- To undertake the daily, mandatory vehicle checks including tyres, damage and the general working order of the bus, submitting the written safety checklist to the Administrator, and be responsible for the fuelling of the vehicle.
- Any other equipment such as First Aid kits must also be regularly checked.
- To clean and keep the vehicle in a tidy condition daily. To take the bus for a wash inside and out at least weekly or as required.
- To operate the bus in line with the scheduled timetable.
- To be a skilled, patient and responsible driver.
- To be responsible for card transactions on the bus as required.
- To work within Hartley Wintney Parish Council’s Policies & Procedures, as directed.
- To undertake training when necessary.
- To assist Community Bus passengers with loading/unloading as required, including wheelchair and mobility scooter users (the bus is equipped with a tail lift).
- To ensure, or where required as part of your direct responsibility, that risk assessments for significant risks within the Council’s undertakings are carried out. Identify appropriate controls and ensure that control measures are implemented.
- When there are significant changes in the hazards or risks of the work activity, to review assessments and notify the Administrator or Executive Clerk as and when such events occur.
- To report any defects in the vehicle to the Administrator or Executive Clerk immediately.
- To ensure service continuity you may be required to cover services operated by other HWPC Community Bus drivers, such as during sickness or annual leave, subject to your availability, for which overtime will be paid.
- To comply with the sickness reporting system to alert other drivers and the Administrator if you are sick and unable to work your shift.
- To review voicemails on the bus mobile phone as required and contact Community Bus passengers if necessary.
