Senior Environmental Health Officer

Senior Environmental Health Officer will be appointed on Band 12 £43,149 - £46,579. Fully qualified Senior EHOs will receive a market forces supplement of £4500, this applies from 1st July 2026 - 30th June 2027, to be paid in July 2027 (pro-rata and paid for months completed in post).

(GRADUATE EHOs will be appointed on Band 11 £39,481 - £42,123)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Hartlepool Borough Council’s Public Protection division. Applications are invited from suitably qualified officers for a permanent Senior EHO post in the Environmental Protection Team.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they possess the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to undertake the requirements of their role. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate recent enforcement experience.

The roles will suit experienced officers however applications are also encouraged from trainee or graduate candidates. Support to achieve fully qualified and professional status will be provided as part of a career progression scheme. Your starting salary will be dependent upon your qualifications and prior experience.

The successful candidates will possess a relevant qualification in Environmental Health to degree standard or equivalent, be a registered Environmental Health Practitioner holding an EHRB certificate of registration or equivalent, or be working towards Chartered Status, with preferably significant post qualification experience and relevant CPD.

Experience across the broad spectrum of environmental health would be desirable as all officers will respond flexibly to complaints, service requests and enquiries relating to statutory nuisance. This post will provide an excellent opportunity to broaden your experience.

As part of the Team, you will effectively inspect local authority permitted industrial sites, respond to planning consultations, monitor air quality across the borough, respond to a variety of environmental protection complaints, service requests and enquiries, taking necessary enforcement action to improve environmental standards and protect public health.

Officers need to be excellent team players and competent individuals used to dealing with complex routine and reactive case work. You will have the ability to provide sound, reasonable judgement particularly while working under pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including negotiation and presentation are essential. Recent relevant enforcement experience is desirable.

The post is based in Hartlepool and will involve travel throughout the borough.
