Responsibilities

  • Undertake clinical reviews of patients presenting with long‑term conditions (Diabetes, Asthma, COPD, Coronary Heart Disease) in line with practice protocols.
  • Provide a full range of nursing services, including venepuncture, blood pressure measurement, injections, cervical smears, swabs and family planning advice.
  • Offer a holistic approach to travel health and implement national and local immunisation programmes.
  • Provide nurse cover for the treatment room, attending to uncomplicated dressings (leg ulcers, suture and clip removal) and advising on safe ear care.
  • Undertake HRT, contraception and family planning reviews.
  • Identify vulnerable patients and set action plans for lifestyle changes.
  • Support preparation, management and aftercare for minor surgery on the premises.
  • Perform opportunistic health screening and advise on health promotion strategies.
  • Provide emotional and psychological support within consultations.
  • Offer anaphylactic and emergency care per practice guidelines.
  • Participate in local or national initiatives such as the QOF and enhanced services.
  • Recognise signs of child abuse, family violence, substance abuse and other risks and follow referral procedures.
  • Complete annual training in anaphylaxis and resuscitation.
  • Conduct home visits for patients unable to attend the practice when community nursing support is not available.
  • Maintain accurate notes of all consultations and treatments in the clinical computer system as per NMC and local policies.
  • Ensure correct completion of all required documentation and registration with the practice.
  • Collect and maintain statistical information for regular and ad‑hoc reports.
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings.
  • Assist in developing practice philosophy, strategy, policy and appropriate protocols.
  • Ensure efficient and appropriate stock control.
  • Participate in continuing professional development to maintain evidence‑based knowledge.
  • Maintain professional registration and adhere to the latest NMC code of Professional Practice.
  • Advise and support other team members; delegate effectively and adopt safe practice principles.
  • Apply current evidence‑based approaches in line with local and national guidelines.
  • Work as a team member, supporting colleagues, prioritising workload and ensuring effective time‑management.
  • Define values and referral mechanisms to meet patient needs.
  • Use personal security systems as per practice guidelines.
  • Identify risks and manage work activities safely.
  • Keep work areas tidy, infection control compliant and free from hazards.
  • Apply infection control measures; observe, monitor and improve current practices, facilities and equipment.
  • Manage specimens, PPE, hand hygiene and sharps safety.
  • Oversee waste management, spillage control and decontamination procedures.
  • Respect equality and diversity legislation; treat patients, carers and colleagues with dignity, maintaining confidentiality and privacy of sensitive information.
  • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance; discuss impact on own work; participate in audit where appropriate.
