HWCP are seeking a highly skilled and experienced

Freelance Accountant to provide independent financial oversight and support.

The contractor will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing statutory and management accounts, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and supporting the organisation’s financial planning and reporting processes.

£325 per day, 30 days per annum , (2 days per month and an additional 6 days during audit periods)

This is a self‑employed role, and the contractor will invoice for agreed work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Governance & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, charity regulations, tax requirements and internal financial policies.
  • Prepare and file statutory returns with the Charity Commission, Companies House and other regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with external auditors to support the preparation of the annual report and accounts.
  • Review reserves annually in conjunction with the Finance Committee.
  • Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of all financial records, including ledgers, journals, payroll data and invoices.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports for the Finance Committee including:
  • Actual vs budget analysis
  • o Year‑end projections
  • o Commentary on variances
  • o Monthly journals, fixed assets, depreciation and grant allocations
  • o Bank and petty cash reconciliations
  • Support the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Provide financial data and advice to the Business Manager as required.
  • Accounting Operations
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable, including payment processing and credit control.
  • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions, including restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Prepare financial claims, returns and reports required by external funders.
  • Communication & Support
  • Respond to financial queries and ...
  • Provide clear financial information to non‑finance colleagues.
  • Stay up to date with accounting standards, charity finance requirements and best practice.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Professional accounting qualification (e. g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Proven experience as an accountant, ideally including freelance or consultancy work.
  • Strong understanding of charity finance and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e. g., Quick Books) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with grant‑funded organisations.
