HPS require a Layout & Piping Manager to lead the layout and piping team across all live projects. The Piping Manager will be responsible for the leadership, planning and delivery of layout and piping projects across all environments. This role provides technical and operational oversight to a team of senior and principal layout and piping designers, ensuring all work is executed efficiently and to the highest quality standards. The Piping Manager will drive performance across multiple sites, manage resources and budgets and ensure compliance with industry standards, client specifications and statutory regulations. The Layout and Piping Manager will have a proven track record in plant layout and piping design and management of small piping teams. The candidate will have a good working knowledge of AutoCAD 3D design and ideally AutoCAD Plant 3D. This role will be based in the HPS offices located at Heaton Mersey, Manchester with some commitment to site working.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a team of up to eight principal/senior piping designers and one junior designer.
- Support the business with proposals/manhour estimating (layout and piping) and early client engagement.
- Perform an active role in layout and piping design and checking.
Layout and Piping Discipline Management
- Management responsibility for the Layout and Piping Engineering department.
- Alignment of layout and piping team with individual project tasks.
- Overseeing engineering deliverables and quality.
- Provide guidance to designers and review technical output prior to submission.
- Lead design reviews with clients to ensure client alignment and satisfaction.
- Ensure all designs meet appropriate design codes and client specific standards.
- Weekly tracking of progress and deliverables against budgets and programme.
- Run weekly layout and piping team meetings to review the above.
- Annual appraisals of staff designers and identification of training requirements.
- Engagement with Project Management to align individual project requirements.
- Engagement with other engineering disciplines to ensure that specific process and EC&I requirements are reflected in the layout and piping design.
- Management, work planning, scheduling and review of work, as appropriate to deliver engineering function specific outputs and defined milestones to business stakeholders.
- Feed into Projects Director and Operations Director in weekly resource planning sessions.
- Definition, setting, monitoring and control of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the department.
- Support recruitment of Layout & Piping department, interviewing on the technical capability.
- Attend and minute all design reviews and model reviews.
- Analysis of lessons learnt and improvement actions.
Business Support
- Support proposals development with respect to layout and piping design functions.
- Visit client sites for sales meetings and scope definition.
- Review work scopes and produce man-hour estimates and delivery programmes.
- Provide strategic input into business development efforts to win new work and retain existing clients.
- Identify and follow up any opportunities for additional work on existing projects.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients.
- Foster a culture of client focus within the layout and piping team.
Perform an Active Role in Layout and Piping Design
- Lead assigned projects from a layout & piping perspective, overseeing engineering deliverables and quality.
- Produce Pipe, Valve, Piping Specials, Insulation, Painting and Finishing Specifications as required.
- Produce Mechanical Installation Specifications, produce enquiry documentation, liaise with mechanical and piping installers and review tenders.
- Liaise with external consultants such as Civil/Structural, HVAC, Building Services, Pipe Stress Analysis.
- Review equipment, valve, line-item tenders and technical documentation from vendors.
- Produce piping deliverables.
- Plant 3D Models and Navisworks files.
- Plot Plans.
- Plant Layout/Equipment Location Drawings.
- Piping Arrangement Drawings.
- Miscellaneous requirement drawings and details.
- Fabrication Isometrics from Plant 3D model.
- Bulk Piping Bill of Materials from Plant 3D model or manual.
- Pipe support schedules and details as required.
Skills & Experience Required:
Essential
- Minimum 10 years experience and proven record of achievement in layout and piping design.
- Minimum 2 years piping team supervision experience.
- Design Authority and technical lead experience.
- Track record of successful multi-disciplinary project delivery in HPS key business fields.
Desirable
- 5+ years of experience in using and administering AutoCAD Plant 3D.
Qualifications Required:
Essential
- HNC or equivalent in mechanical engineering.
- CSCS card or similar safety passport (may be obtained post recruitment).
Desirable
- Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering.
- Membership of professional body such as MIMechE.
