Harry Lawson Ltd. of Broughty Ferry provide a range of road transport services throughout the UK, specialising in tanker haulage and general haulage. Established in 1945 and having operated in these fields for over 75 years, we have a long history of delivering an efficient and reliable high-quality service to our customer base.

We currently employ 90 staff and operate a modern fleet of over 70 articulated vehicles and 150 trailers. Now a 3rd generation privately owned family business, our strengths continue to stem from the flexible approach of our team and our core family values and ethics that transcend throughout the business.

As a result of continued growth and succession planning, we are seeking an experienced and proactive Operations Manager to join and lead our team at Harry Lawson Ltd. This is an integral role in the daily management of the company and combines several responsiblities. Reporting directly to the Operations Director you will be expected to lead projects and drive the business forward. As the role and business develops, other key management appointments will be made to further bolster the team and drive us forward.

Hours of work

40 to 43.5 hours per week

  • Monday to Friday 8am to 17.30pm or variation of to suit business and candidate requirements
  • Out of hours mobile (rotational – one night per week, one weekend in four)

Salary – competitive, depending on experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Oversee daily transport operations and work closely with customers, suppliers and internal departments to provide efficient and effective solutions to our core customer base.
  • Alongside the Operations Director, assist with managing, developing and mentoring employees, completing PDR’s and leading the onboarding process for new hires.
  • Liaise with all internal and external stakeholders to understand the business flows and develop areas of improvement. Drive new business leads in both existing and new markets and support bids/tenders.
  • Lead ISO implementation (ISO 45001, 14001, and 9001) and the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of SHEQ policies, procedures, and systems. Champion a culture of safety and quality across the business through training, audits, and proactive leadership.
  • Project lead for the implementation of several projects, including a new Transport Management System (TMS), safety system and carbon reduction projects

What we’re looking for:

We’re looking for someone who is commercially aware, detail-oriented, and highly organised. You’ll need to be approachable, decisive, and able to influence others positively. Above all, you’ll have a natural leadership style and take pride in delivering results. You will have:

  • Proven experience in a senior Operations Management role, preferably in the transport/logistics sector
  • Extensive experience of managing people and leading successful teams
  • An understanding of the markets that we work in and the ability to drive business development through a personable approach
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 and a strong understanding of HSEQ and transport legislation and compliance
  • Excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Must be adaptable and have a can‑do attitude
  • Advanced Microsoft skills (Excel & Word) complex spreadsheet creation and ownership
