The environment:
Harrow School is situated within a beautiful site in Harrow on the Hill, north west London, and is one of the best-known schools in the world, with around 840 boys studying at Harrow. This unique school archive was set up in 1981. It was created to collect and preserve records relating to the history of the School with the intention of making the information accessible to future generations. The archive contains material reflecting the organisation and development of the School from its founding by John Lyon in 1572 up to the present.
It is an integral part of the School and its community containing documents and collections relating to the history of all aspects of School life as well as being used as a study resource by the Harrow School boys, staff and researchers in conjunction with the Vaughan Library and Old Speech Room Gallery.
The role:
We are seeking an experienced, qualified and registered Archivist to ensure the effective running of the School's archive. The Archivist is responsible for acquiring new items, preserving, cataloguing and storing the collection. There are opportunities to produce exhibitions and displays for the school and work with a range of staff and agencies within the Harrow school community. The archive is well used by academic researchers and handles a high number of enquiries about the school.
The skills:
Candidates must be enthusiastic, highly organised with a keen attention to detail. They must possess excellent IT skills for maintaining and creating digital records using archival databases. Excellent communication skills are essential, evidence of working as part of a team, experience of successful time management and meeting deadlines. Harrow School is a vibrant and highly academic environment and we would welcome a candidate who would enjoy being a part of this community.
The benefits include:
free lunch when working a full day
free parking
automatic enrolment in the School's pension scheme
use of the School's sports facilities such as the swimming pool, gym, and running track.
subsidised membership of the tennis, golf, angling and social clubs.
Applications will be processed as they are received, so early application is advised.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome anyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All successful applicants must be willing to undergo enhanced child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with any past employer and the Disclosure and Barring Service, and it is an offence to apply for the role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. No member of staff will be able to start until these checks are complete and this process takes, on average, a month. Please plan accordingly.
