The London Borough of Harrow is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Environmental Health Officer to join its Environmental Protection Team. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to develop practical experience across a broad range of environmental health functions while contributing to the delivery of high-quality services that protect and improve the wellbeing of Harrow's residents and businesses.
Working within a supportive and experienced team, the successful candidate will gain valuable exposure to a variety of environmental health disciplines and receive ongoing guidance and professional development to build their technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence. The role offers hands-on experience in a local authority setting, providing an excellent foundation for a career in environmental health.
This position is particularly suited to individuals who have recently completed an Environmental Health degree or those who are currently studying towards an Environmental Health qualification and wish to gain practical experience alongside their studies. However, applications are welcomed from all candidates who can demonstrate that they meet the essential requirements of the role.
The council intends to recruit either two candidates who are currently studying for an Environmental Health degree on a part-time basis, or one individual who has recently completed an Environmental Health degree through full-time study. This is a unique opportunity to develop professionally while making a positive contribution to the local community and supporting the council's commitment to maintaining a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment for all.
About you:
- An understanding of the nature and scope of environmental health work in the public sector, including its contribution to improving public health.
- Awareness of the core areas of environmental health and how EHOs secure improvements e.g. through informal and formal routes including enforcement.
- An understanding of the rationale for carrying out inspections/audits and investigations and an understanding of the organisation's vision and corporate aims.
- Ability to work in and contribute to the organisation of the team.
- High degree of literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to support and assist colleagues in resolving cases.
- Influencing, persuading, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels in a clear and concise manner.
