The London Borough of Harrow is seeking an experienced Building Control Surveyor to join its dedicated team. This role offers the opportunity to play a vital part in ensuring that construction across the borough meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance. You will be responsible for processing and scrutinising Building Regulation applications, carrying out detailed inspections of building works, and offering professional advice on a wide range of building control matters. The position also involves supporting the Local Authority in managing Dangerous Structures, which includes participation in out-of-hours response when required.
We are looking for a candidate who is qualified to class 2A or above and who can bring strong technical knowledge, sound judgement, and a commitment to delivering an excellent service to residents, developers, and partners. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to the safe and sustainable development of Harrow while working within a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
The successful candidate will have:
- An understanding of the Council's Equal Opportunity policy in relation to employment, and an awareness of the implications of that policy for this job.
- A detailed working knowledge of current Building Control practice procedures and legislation.
- A detailed working knowledge of more complex construction techniques.
- Ability to organise workload, to establish priorities for action, and to delegate duties in order to carry out the necessary work within statutory deadlines.
- Ability to prepare accurate and detailed reports on site inspections.
- Ability to negotiate with applicants and developers in order to achieve compliance with statutory requirements.
- Ability to present information, verbally and in writing on Building Regulations applications, and other matters in a manner which clearly demonstrates a thorough structured, logical, and orderly approach.
Minimum two years working in a Building Control office with experience of checking applications and carrying out site inspections with limited supervision. Alternatively, no experience with a relevant qualification.
